Cutting down acrylic nails with gel polish-help!

I'm fairly new and I'm needing to shorten someones acrylic nails. They have gel polish on the acrylic. So I know when I file I will need to red do the top coat but the gel polish will not be capped. Do I buff and do another coat of the colour first?

You may need to reduce some of the acrylic at the free edge as it may be too thick once you file down the length. So file off the gel polish, reduce length and refine the shape then reapply gel and top coat.
