I've had three non related experiences of potential employers trying to rip me off.

experience 1) they wanted me to be in an employed role (using their products, charging their prices, doing set treatments with hours set by them) but getting paid as a self employed person (they said their business was struggling and they needed someone to help them get bums on seats and they admitted that they would find it better for them to pay me as a self employed person)

experience 2) the employer invited me to an interview and trade test. he barely said 2 words to me and had me working on a series of paying clients for the afternoon where he wasn't even watching me (they were in private treatment rooms!!). He then said he would like to invite me to work unpaid the following Saturday so that he could decide. He phoned me however, the evening of my first visit to him asking if I could cover a shift for the next day...I wasn't even employed by him when he asked me this!!!

experience 3) this happened today, again I've found a job that I would like to do and the employer told me that I was to do what she called a trial where I was paid 5 pound an hour cash in hand. She said her previous employees were untrustworthy so she needs to protect her business and the time it takes to train people etc. I told her that cash in hand and less than minimum wage would mean that both I and her would be breaking the law.

I am feeling really worried about this...are we really in an industry where people are trying to get one over on people on such a consistant basis or am I being unlucky? The job adverts here are ones that I found on gumtree (experience 2 and 3) and the jsa website (experience 1)

I'm getting worried in the sense that am I looking in the wrong places? is it me being too defensive of myself as an employee or is it that this is simply behaviour that is to be expected an it's a case of either avoid it accept it depending on your circumstances?

I trained for 18 months to be the best I can be. I don't feel that I'm the best most experienced therapist out there who deserves everything handed to me on a plate but on the other hand, I seek to be employed in a way that is both legal and professional as I don't want to find myself in a situation where I'm effectively having to agree to something that could put my rights etc in danger later down the line.

I can't stress enough that I am not the type of person who is all about shouting my rights left right and centre and not taking responsibility. All I ask if that I am treated fairly and legally when it comes to recruitment/potential employment.

I can take critism if people think that I should be "less fussy" or "more of a risk taker" but frankly I am really worried as I have been exposed to so many people who I think are behaving suspiciously with regards to recruiting/employing people.

I want to make a career out of beauty and I want to take it seriously. I'm getting so worried though that it will be harder to do this than I thought due to such unexpected factors/experiences such as these.

Please help because I would hate to lose faith in the industry so soon after my training.

Worried of Manchester :(

ETA: I would also like to add that I'm so baffled about this...like surely if you had invested all that money/energy etc into starting up a business then you would have done something as fundamental as knowing how to legally and professionally recruit/employ people? surely people going into business and investing so much into wouldn't be that short of knowledge? Would these people really be newbie business people who need a helping hand and need to do a bit more research or ultimately, is it unlikely that they'd have got that far without being aware of how what they're doing (regarding recruitment/employment) is wrong?

Sounds like you have had a bad run of luck with the above jobs!
Is there anyway you can start up yourself? Or rent a chair totally self employed?

My advise would be to register with a job agency, i know that in my area we have specialist agencies dedicated to the hair & beauty industry. I think that reputable companies and genuine business owners are more likely to use the services of these agencies and would then be unable to offer less than minumum wage or cash in hand! Not that i am saying that gumtree isnt a great website, its actually where i found my wee room! But as we all know the web can be filled with some dodgy characters! :)) i hope you get sorted with a job soon! I know its difficult to get started sometimes! Good luck! :)

Not all employers are like this, you have been really unlucky. I am recruiting and often have therapists ask if they can have cash in hand as they don't like paying tax and NI.

During trade test, the therapist either works on a member of my staff, or brings a model. Occaisionally I ask them to do a manicure on a real client, but we do not charge that client (they are usually waiting for a colour to take and are happy to be a model and have a freebie).

My HR and contracts are taken care of by a pro HR company, likewise my payroll. Often I have therapists who don't want a real and serious contract. They are horrified that they cannot build a home or mobile business in direct competition while working in my salon. Legit payroll means no sneaky signing on (yes really).

I hope you find a genuine employer who will value you and help you grow as a therapist. They are out there.

I to have had strange experiences!!

All on different occasions!!
Being asked to to trade test days on paying clients , being asked if I would be willing to pretend to be a single mum so she could get better funding, being told only x amount of money will be paid by cheque and the rest cash so she doesn't pay tax, being told that 4 years ex and a degree in therapies wasn't.enough and I would have to join a salon as a work experience girl!! .( I later found this place did this continuously and ended up having loads of free staff) I'm sure there's more I went to many strange interviews till I found my current job!!

I could never get over just how open interviewers 'honesty' to illegal activity (tax etc)

Not all employers are like this but I have also done a couple of "trade test days" working on paying clients while they had no idea that I don't even work there!
I was once invited for a trade test for couple of hours and ended up doing a whole days work (8hours) with no break doing treatments on paying clients. I earned the salon a nice amount of money that day while they haven't paid me anything for this as it was my "trade test". No need to say I did not take the job.
The cash in hand thing amazes me. It's not just in the beauty industry, but everywhere else. I have many times been offered cash in hand for different kinds of jobs.

How dodgy is that - especially the one that wanted to pay you cash in hand - I'd be *so* tempted to shop them to HMRC for that...

I know dodgy..... It is prob hard to prove tho!!

Makes you wonder how they get away with it x

HM Revenue & Customs: Reporting Tax Evasion - there's an email form you can fill in on there...

People who don't pay their tax are getting an unfair advantage though - undercutting salons who pay their fair share to the taxman - as well as not making their full contribution towards paying for the NHS, education, etc...

From what yas are saying I take it that the lady who was offering me cash in hand is aware of why she shouldn't do that?

I don't think I'd dob anyone in because I believe in karma and don't want to spread any negative energy (I'm sure they'll slip up in their own time and my faith in human nature would kind of like to hope that maybe they're niaieve business people who need a helping hand but hmmm...)

Thanks for the advice and support on here guys because I felt so down today with this having happened for a third (and I really hope a final) time.

I just don't know how people can sleep at night knowing that the taxman etc could come after them anyday and that they're knowingly ripping people off who potentially mean well :(

Dont worry you will find a decent employer if not!! .....become self employed x
