Good morning Geeks,

Just a quick question...................Im not sure when to do the mask in my facials.
cleanse and tone,
Mask? tone:rolleyes:
massage with essential oils.

Im not sure and to be honest its been such a while i cant remember!

thanks xx

cleanse, tone, massage, mask, moisturiser...........I think :green:

I think different places teach different ways of doing it and I guess the product ranges you use may make things a little different to?

Mask is usually applied at the end of a facial before moisturising.

I usually do Cleanse, exfoliate, massage, mask, moisturise.

I was also taught that the mask comes after massage as it helps the massage medium work more effectively into the skin.

I cleanse, tone, exfoliate, steam, massage, mask & moisturise.

I understand that different people are taught differently. I was taught
cleanse.....tone.....analysis of skin.....exfoliate.....then electricals/steam/extraction etc....massage...... mask......moisturize.

This makes sense to me, because a) you want to get the less luxurious part (for the client) like extraction out of the way before settling into a relaxing, pampering massage. b) The massage is also warming and increases the circulation to the skins surface thus giving the mask better chance for absorption of its properties or drawing out impurities etc..., depending on the mask.

hiya i was taught nvq facials last year and the routine i was taught was : cleanse , diangnose , exfoliate , steam , massage , mask, tone then moisturise ,

Hya
I was always taught superficial cleanse, tone, skin analysis, deep cleanse, tone, exfoliate, steam, extraction (if necessary), tone, massage, mask, tone then moisturise. xxx

Blimy 4 tones ! i only do 1 ! it just shows that it differs greatly from place to place in regards to routine .

Thanks everyone, thats great!........................Ill be cleansing, toning, exfoliating, toning, massaging and then a complimenting mask to the oils ive used in the massage.(I think)

I love this site xxx

I use the mask after the massage (using an occlusive masque to aid penetration of the massage medium), but here's a link that might be of interest to people using water-based active masks, throws a different approach into the mix - anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the link Martin,I tend to agree and as im massaging using essential oils ,they would benefit from staying on the skin.
I think I will massage last and blot the skin to remove any excess oil and end my massage there.Interesting!

Good point raised Andy! I meet Florence Barrett Hill who wrote this article and we had a great discussion about this.

I raised this with Dermalogica who understood where Florence was coming from and said that their massage medium "massage cream", the "oil free massage" oil (yes sounds contradicting but it exist) and the serums used under the masks are all water based. Therefore, doing the mask after the massage was effective.

So really it depends on your skincare company. I remember when I was trained with Guinot years ago their massage cream was also water based.

Very thought provoking Martin. Im one of those who are guilty of doing as their told - by the manufacturer as well as tutors! I use massage oil so I can really see where this article is coming from and will re-evalute the way I do things.

It's certainly good for us as therapists to constantly question our techniques & procedures as to the whys & wherefores, taking into account modern understandings of the skin & how it works! Florence Barrett Hill has done so much to push forwards therapists understanding of the skin, and her book on Skin Analysis should be a must for any therapist seriously interested in 'skin treatment'.

I do cleanse, exfloliate, mask, then massage chest and arms while the mask is on then remove mask and massage the face, then finish with toner and moisturiser and a bliss mist:green: xxxx

I am in the middle of a NVQ level 2 Improve and Maintain Facial Skin condition the routine I am being taught just now is;
Lip and Eye Cleanse
Superficial Cleanse
Analyse
Deep Cleanse
Tone
Moisturise
Exfoliate
Specialised Treatments ie Steam, Mask
Tone
Moisturise
Massage

Please let me know what you feel about this routine and should I change something once I am fully qualified?

They teach to massage AFTER the moisturiser & to moisturise again before exfoliating, i.e. you moisturise twice?! How does that work?! If that's what they're teaching then yes I'd be changing a lot!!!

Well Im sure you've had your question answered by now ;) but it also depends on the range you are using.

For example when I used Academie one of the anti ageing treatments required the mask to be applied and activated before the massage, and the products were then massaged in.

When I was at college we had to tone about a thousand times during the facial yet the range I use now require toner spraying once at the end of the facial.

I would consult the training manual of the product range that you are using but in general I have always applied the mask after the massage.

Know what you mean hun! Seems daft toning so much but think the reason we were taught to do that is because even after you have taken your cleanser, exfoliater. mask etc off with sponges it is just to make sure all of the residue is off.
