Hello

Long ago in another English speaking country, I used to work as a Nail Technician. I had a manufacturers training certificate and that's all. Life moved on and I found my way into another career but I have always had a passion for and interest in skin care. I've decided I want to get back into the beauty industry and focus my training so I can specialise in lasers for skin care / hair removal.

I realise that in the UK you need to have a level 4 qualification for laser training. Is anyone able to recommend quality schools that offer good quality fast track courses? I know I have to start from the beginning but don't want to spend 2-3 years in college as I'm already 40!

Thank you x

Hi,

I don't do ipl laser but I did look into it. I'm 36, so I understand not wanting to go to college. Don't worry, you don't need to.

If I was in your position I'd start by renting an ipl machine. I found this company on salongeek and their monthly rental is super affordable:

And it comes with free training. I rang around some insurance companies, you'd also need an anatomy and physiology qualification. This online one will be enough to get you insured:

That'd be enough to get you started. I'd build up client base like that first, but I do believe regulations are changing and you will have to be level 4 qualified from next year, or year after.

You don't need to do the whole beauty qualification. I can't recommend this company as I haven't trained with them, but they do a complete beginner laser course that takes you to level 4:

You start by doing a level 2 facial course which then allows you to do the level 4 laser course.

I can't mention prices here, against forum rules. The last 2 links have prices on them. Give Inspa a call, you'll be pleasantly surprised how affordable their rental is. You don't pay any money up front either! They invoice you after your first months rental.

Good luck xx

Hi Isla1,

The requirement of a L4 qualification currently depends on your location. If you contact you local authority and request their specific requirement for special/laser treatments, that should tell you what level of training you require.

Some insurance companies may specify the you hold the L4 qualification, but most require that you have attended the laser 'core of knowledge' course and manufacturer training. We offer both of these free as part of our laser packages.

It is also worth noting that in a meeting with our partner VTCT earlier this year, it was discussed making the L4 qualification more available without having to complete unrelated beauty training (waxing, facials, etc.). Therefore, the course/qualification may soon be adapted to better suit your needs.

Please feel free to message us for more information.

Thank you both very much for these replies :)

I have already found somewhere to do laser training with a possibility to work for her but she won't allow me to train until I've reached level 4 qualification and has said its a mandatory requirement. Not being from the UK, I am finding it (surprisingly) difficult to navigate the different qualifications and therefore vete suitable training providers!

I possibly should have been more specific with my post. I am looking for fast tracked general beauty training hopefully with a heavy focus on skin. Not laser training though if that was included later, great. I don't want to work for myself (at least not right away) so will need training that a salon employer would respect as thorough. I'm 'mature' and take care of myself and am looking at potential employers where the feeling is clinical rather than trendy.

I'm also based in Mid Sussex so would prefer to stay within the London to Brighton areas.

Any further training institution recommendations?

Thanks :)
