Hi there

I am currently trying to teach myself how to do gel nails. Not to be able to do them for anyone else, solely for my own nails (to save me forking out a fortune at the beauticians).

Can someone please help with my dilemma. I am doing really well at applying my tips and gel, however, no matter how well I do it and how much time I take, I still keep getting some lifting.

I haven't been using a Primer but will be purchasing one tomorrow. Is there anything else I can be doing wrong?

Any help from you specialists would be fantastic.

I think the main problem is I am not buffing my nail with a 100/180 Grit. The reason why is I felt this was extremely damaging to the nail bed (as in it nearly rips it to bits). Is this what you have to do though to allow for the correct surface for the gel to adhere too?

I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to help. I am sure once I perfect my techniques I will be able to successfully apply my own gel nails.

Thanks in advance everyone!!

Your right about the 100 grit file hun.....only its the nail plate and not the nail bed that would get damaged...unless you went through it....eekkkk....thing is we (professional nail technicians) make it look alot easier than it really is...thats because we have been trained and have experience...without that training and experience its not easy at all.

Best advise i can give you is to book yourself in for some training, or get your nails done by a professional.

Thanks for that. I had planned to do a course and was going to get some funding from ILA Scotland, however, I haven't been able to get the funding and really don't have the money at the minute as I have just bought my first house. I really do want to be able to do my nails though and I know you are sooooo right, I think I will just have to save for a while and maybe book on to a course at the end of the year.

Thanks again!
