Most good hair extensionists give their clients an Aftercare Leaflet with guidelines on how the customer can safely care for her hair extensions at home. Sometimes clients are so excited about getting hair extensions fitted they do not always listen to instructions given by their extensionist on how to care for their hair extensions once they have got home. For this reason a lot of hair extensionists give out aftercare leaflets to their customers. Some extensionists also give free aftercare kits, which include Specialist Shampoo, Conditioner and Daily SprayIn.
The most important notes to follow are:
1. When you have had your extensions fitted, do not wash your hair for 3 days, this allows time for the bonds to "set" and become hard.
2. Never condition the bonds, condition from mid length down only.
3. Only use Specialist Hair Extension Products as some commercial products have strong chemicals in that can dry out extension hair and soften bonds causing them to slip.
4. Wear a soft scrunchie at night to keep your extensions neatly in a soft ponytail.
5. If swimming, remember chlorine can soften bonds, so always shower hair thoroughly after swimming.
6. Sea water has salt in it, and salt can soften bonds and dry hair out, so if swimming in the sea ensure that you rinse hair thoroughly.
7. If sunbathing wear a hat or scalf so that the sun does not dry out your extensions.
8. Go back to your extensionist every month for maintenance visits.
9. Hair extensions must be removed by your extensionist after 3 months. If you leave them in for longer this will put unde strain on the roots.
10. Do not bleach or dye your extensions as the chemicals in the colourant may not be compatible with the chemicals used to process your extensions and the result may not be successful.
11. Do not chemically straighten or perm extensions.
