Hi
I have a client who doesn't want nail extensions as she is worried about damage to her own nails.
I was going to give her a nice manicure but was wondering what you thought about doing a very thin layer of acrylic over the top to make them a little stronger???????
If so would i do the normal thing such as etch the nail and bond/primer etc.

why does she think enhancements will ruin her nails...its your job as her nail tech to inform her that having something just sitting there on top of her nail causes no damage at all...it how they are applied, looked after by the client...and removed that can cause the damage.

Etching the natural nail during prep is one of the things can can cause nail namage...just the shine needs to be removed prior to enhancements.

No matter how you are applying the product (think or thicker, natural nail overlays or tip and overlay) you do need to follow the same prep/binder/primer as you normally would.

To be honest if you apply products too thin it has the opposite effect as the natural nail will flex when knocked and the thin overlay wont be able to withstand that flex and so cracks and chips....thats why we build the nail in certain areas of the nail to withstand these knocks.

Damage to your own nails is because some nail techs dont do it properly...they can take layers off the natural nail just by filing .thin layer over her nails is called a natural nail overlay. Did you get shown how to do this when you done your training?

Hiya,

You need to tell your clients that acrylic nails do not affect the health of your natural nail. I have had acrylics on for YEARS and if I ever do a soak off, my nails are really strong underneath. Its how the tech does the nails. If they go to those salons where they drill the natural nailbed or use a really coarse file and go hell for leather on the natural nail they will end up with damaged nails, but, if you do your nails carefully, (which im sure you do) not damaging the natural nail, your clients nails will be fine after.

An 'overlay' over the natural nail is pretty much the same as a normal application except there is no tip to apply.

I think it is our job as professionals to educate people about this as alot of people have the same opinion as that client. It is soooo frustrating to me as I know I can prove them wrong. :)

HTH. Good luck.
Corrine. x
