Hello, I am an owner of a business that helps skilled people to set up their own businesses. I have a client at the moment that wants to start a Salon. She is Level 3 qualified in beauty therapy, she knows people who are specialised in nails and massages.
I know nothing about the beauty industry and would like to know what would be required to set up a beauty business both financially and equipment wise.
We have an A1 shop in a decent location that we believe would be suitable but it would need to be converted to salon use.

Thank You

Hi there

I'm currently in the process of opening my first shop based salon having worked as a home salon for some time.

There are probably a lot of threads on here already and most geeks will tell you to go and search through them. I would recommend that you do this as you will find a huge amount of info and it will usually be good advice from existing salon owners.

I would just say that with my council A1 is not suitable for a beauty salon and it may invoke a change of use with the planning department. My planning application cost £335 and I had to apply to change to Sui Generis which covers non specific uses or "none of the above".

You will then be looking at any refurb costs, manicure desks £200+, beauty couches £100-£1200 depending on type, therapist/client chairs £50+ per item, stock £hundreds depending on supplier, supplier training, reception desk £300+, uniforms, printing, utilities, rates, rent, staff, decorative items, music system, PRS licence, poss licencing for certain treatments with the local authority, insurance both pub liability and buildings/contents, towels, laundry facilities.

The list is pretty endless. I'm getting my refurb carried out by my commercial refurber husband (v handy sometimes) and it's still gonna hit the pocket in excess of £4k, but my property needs some serious work. That just covers the fixed stuff, anything that is moveable ie furniture, stock or further training is on a separate budget and I'm reckoning on at least £4-5k and that includes some savvy purchases of "vintage" furniture on a well known auction site.

All this will depend on the number of treatment rooms as each room will need a treatment couch and supporting equipment and consumables.

Hope that helps and is not too off putting.
