please can someone help me. I would love to be a beauty lecturer but I have no idea how to go about it. I am a fully qualified beauty therapist with over 5 years experience however all the job vacancies I have looked at require me to have a teaching qualification. What is a teaching qualification? and how do I get it? so I can then start applying to my local colleges.

Many thanks

Gemma Louise

Hi

You need to get in touch with your local college and find out if they do the City and Guilds 7302, 7304 (1 year) and 7307 (I think that is the last one's number and is like the PGCE and is a 2 year diploma). The 7302 and 7304 can be combined now and should take about a year but when I did it I had to be doing some kind of teaching so they could observe that you are doing it correctly.

I would imagine that a course starts in September somewhere locally to you

HTH and good luck

Hi Gemma,

There are two ways you can do it....either a City and Guilds 7303 course over a 10 week period (3.5 hrs per week usually) this is known as the PTTLS or you can dive straight into the Certificate Of Education which is two years part-time or one year full time at Uni...if you already have a degree you would do a PGCE instead of the Cert ed...

I have just finished the PTTLS course which I have loved...it's been a great intro to teaching and makes you realise that there's a lot more to it than just standing up infront of a group of students and showing them what you can do (which is what I thought, lol).

I am starting the Cert Ed in September, you have to have at least 150 paid teaching hours in place before they will accept you on this...so generally having the PTTLS will encourage a college to take you on so that you can get your hours in. A lot of it is chicken and egg...ie..you need students to practice on but you can't get students until you are qualified etc.

Also alot of colleges want you to have your A1 and A2 Assessor Awards before they will employ you...

Another good way to see if it's for you is to ask to shadow a lecturer at your local college...I have done this and it's an invaluable experience.

Good luck,
Sarah x

i'm glad u asked this cos i'm interested 2 i've asked before and not really got the answer where as these girls have got straight to the point very helpful :D

hi i am in the process of becoming a lecturer. at my college you do the ptlls course which i have just finished. then do the ctlls course over a year with 30 min teaching hours which can be voluntary. then its certEd or another one. really enjoying it tho

this is something i would be interested in eventually, but to teach in a college do you need to have an nvq level 2/3 or is it ok to have equivalent? as i have done many cousres and had certificates, so i am basicallya level 2 although i can do a lot more treatments than you actually get taught at level 2, but not enough to be a level 3, does this make any sense? and can anyone please answer this?

Hi,
You need to have a level 3 qualification...it doesn't have to be an nvq (I'm itec qualified) but it needs to be equivalent. Also you need at least 5 years industry experience within the subjects you want to teach. If you are still unsure, why not list your quals and the relevant awarding body and we can probably help you on here...
Best wishes,
Sarah x

I have just started a new job in a spa and have really been thinking about becoming a beauty lecturer. How do I go about this and what qualifications do I need?

This is a very old thread and times change very quickly in FE. I would suggest you do a search on here using the search term, "PTTLS". You'll find a wealth of information.

Hey I completed the ptlls and CTLLS course now going to the dtlls . I'm doing the dtlls at a different college and they are making me do my ptlls again because it is at level 3 and not 4 . Is the cumpulsory ??
