Hello,

I did some work on my website yesterday www.powderandpout.co.uk and would love to know, how do I link it up with other salon geeks (from different areas) websites to increase it in google searches?

I don't have a clue so would love any simple advice.

Thank you

Clare

Normally, the easiest way is to add a "links" page to your website, where you add a list of links to other websites.

I'm not sure how you do it with Chooboo - do they give you some sort of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) text editor? But you'd need to put a "hyperlink" in to every site that you want to link to from your links page - and then request that people that you link with also link back to you.

Then it would be up to you to check that people have linked back to you; you may want to check each site you have linked with periodically to make sure that they still link back to you, otherwise they will be benefiting from your link, but you won't be benefiting from theirs if they have taken their link to you off their site (although I dare say it would be possible to design some server-side code that would periodically check each site you've linked with to make sure that the link to you is still there, and to delete the link back to them from your page if not)...

Normally it's not possible to "automate" the process, unless your web company has specifically designed a system where you are able to request to swap links with other websites which that particular company have designed.

I see you've already been on the "official link swapping thread"... http://www.salongeek.com/biz-geek/107998-your-links-official-links-swap-thread-3.html - which was certainly a good place to start though!

Thanks Ruth, now I'm a bit slow with technical stuff so basically do you mean I just write someone elses web address on my site? Woudl that increase me google ratings? Sorry but really no techy brained

Actually, it's other people putting *your* web address on *their* sites that boosts your Google placement (it's all to do with what they call "PageRank" where they count the number of links *in* to your site from other sites to decide how "important" your site is)... but the idea of swapping links is that you put a link back to the person's site who links to you (so that you *both* benefit).

So if you add a link to someone else, then it benefits them; it would only benefit you if they put a link back to you from their site too...

ahh I see, so I only put on people who put me on? okay got that, I just cracked how to put a link on my site so feeling like a bit of a genius lol, Im all ready to get linking up wohooo. thanks so much Ruth

Yep, that's the general idea - unless you specifically want to link to interesting sites that might not link back to you, e.g. sites giving information about the products that you use for example.
