How often should acrylics be replaced?

I don't do acrylics yet but a friend of mine has had them for about 3 years and only ever had them infilled, never completely taken off and replaced. She was asking me the other day if she should get them totally replaced and I had no idea. Searched on Google and got mixed answers
 
The nails can be infilled for ever if all is well with them :)

Ah thanks, I told her to just look out for any discolouration when the nail varnish is removed. She goes to one of the places where they don't speak English so she couldn't ask the nail tech!! :)
 
On my Harmony Fusion course we were told to soak off and redo every 3 months
 
There is no reason to remove them just to put them back on again, you're only sitting through 30 odd minutes of soaking in acetone for nothing. Infilling is perfectly fine.
