Hi just wondering can anyone help me. I have done a foundation in gel nails course with ciate. It only took 6 weeks and was far too cramed. The girl teaching the course was great but she could only do so much in the time. I passed the course and I dont think my set of nails for the exam were great. Also she quickly showed us how to do a french and that was it. Now I feel I have spent a fortune on the course and not in a position to charge people for what I do. My plan was to charge people a rate because I am only learning ie to cover cost of product ect. but I really dont think I can even do that. My main problem is the look of the nails. We were told how much product to put on and I think it is far too much, it makes the nail looks bulbus (I hope you know what I mean). Can I use less procuct?
This is something I have wanted to do for years and could'nt afford, I have applied for a beauty therapy course in september at an Institute of Further Education so it is something I love and want to have a career in.

I have just really gone on and on there but if someone can please help me.

Hiya ... your not out of your depth here... your very welcome here...

to be honest 6 weeks for a gel course is a long course compared to many....but i guess it depends also on how many where on the course...?

Are you able to take a picture of your nails and post on here....scary thought i know but when i first did this it helped me lots....i bet the nails are not as bad as you think they are...and we can offer tips and advise on any improvements.

What gel are you using...?

I think it took me 6 months from after my training to actually look at my nails and think...yeah they are ok...it takes time.

When practising on people you 100% SHOULD be charging something.....even if it is only to cover costs. HTH x

I really would suggest for you to go back to this place of training and explain to them how you have spent out a fortune and reallly dont feel as though you have learnt enough! See what they say perhaps they could give you some extra training.

In the mean time i would really suggest you practice as much as you can on family members and friends etc

xx

Here is the good news ... it sounds like you have an 'eye' for beauty and you know what the end look you want should be before you create the nail!!

Of course you can try using less product to achieve the end look you want.

Everyone has to start somewhere and If you know how you want those nails to look then you will get there in the end so, yes, make a small charge to willing models to at least cover the cost of your materials; that is only fair.

No one leaves a Foundation course (well hardly anyone) with the confidence or the skill to do great nails right off the bat. You will feel out of your depth. This is normal. Education in nails is ongoing and a beginners course is just that ... the beginning.

If I could find people to practice on how have other people done this. I am using Ciate pro gum two. We havent even been shown using colour gels like I said she didint even spend time on french and I am quite sure that is what alot of people want day to day. Maybe I am wrong.

Sorry to hear this. When you come off training it should have given you enough practice and knowledge that you feel confident about your abilities to start work immediately.

In Sweden the gel nail tech training lasts between 10 and 16 days depending on the supplier and includes manicure and french. Acrylic takes another five days. You are expected to make 25 sets of nails usually and also 25 rebalances - the training is usually organised to be 1 or 2 days a week to give you time. The UK training to my mind (but then again what do I know) does seem to be a little short especially considering you are effectively paying for the knowledge and skills to start a new career from day 1 after the training.

Ciate states 4 days for gel or acrylic on their website. Ciate Professional Nail Products Professional Nail Care Products and other adverts I've seen in Scratch state a similar period. Do you really mean 6 weeks or 6 days?

My advice would be to go back to the school, express your concerns and if they are professional they should help you. It's not clear to me (perhaps I'm a bit thick this morning) if you trained with Ciate directly or one of their schools - but if a school and they don't help you, call Ciate.

If that doesn't work, why don't you get your nails done by one of their salons - i.e. that New York City nails in many Debenhams. Then you can watch how that nail tech does you nails and she will probably answer a few questions too!

(when Iryna first started her salon in Sweden she had a customer who only came once and seemed to be closely watching her technique. When she didn't come back, Iryna was concerned her nails had given some kind of problem but her calls weren't answered. Later we found out she worked for a competitor!)

A wise woman once said "it takes about 100 sets to get the hang of it".

I don't want to dishearten you, but that about sums it up; at least as far as my own experience.

You've been given sage advice. Keep practicing, you WILL get the hang of it.
You can also check out the vids by Carl aka nailzoo on youtube. It's not gel, but gives you an idea of the thickness you want to aim for.
