Oh oh, I so don't knoiw what to do! I have always worked in a small local salon ever since I qualified 6 years ago. The thing is... Although I love it, I'm as high as I am going to get and there are no advancement oppurtunities. So..... To cut a long story short I went for an interview today for a chain of salons and.. They offered me a job! they offered me more money than I'm currently on and mentioned that theres management oppurtunities available also and it's a large - ish company. Great you may be thinking.... However. What do I say to my loveable possibly soon to be ex employer.... I do not want any hard feelings and want them to understand I love it there but I just need more in terms of money and oppurtunity. I don't know how to bring up the subject and am dreading any awkwardness.... Am even considering not taking this new job even though I know that would be silly!!! Please help!!

I had the same thing happen 2 me last year when a long term member of my staff left. If your boss has any sense she should be anticipating this as she should realise u can go no further with her. Make sure you give her as much notice as poss asap and be honest with the reasons. She should be appreciative of your loyal service and although she wont like it, this is part of owning a salon. Hopefully u are not going 2 any local competitors, so there should be no reason why you cant remain friends afterwards. Good luck.

i just wanted to say although you might hurt feelings or end up a bit awkward - at the end of the day this your you life and you only get one chance at it. if you feel you have come to the end then reguardless of who isn't happy about it you have to do what's right for you and if that's accepting another job then go for it. x

Firstly...try not to worry so much. Whatever you are imagining as the way that conversation will go, it wont be anywhere near as bad.

Luckily you love the place and the people there and are obviously very attached to them. This actually means you are in a good position to sit down and explain that you have had a job offer from else where and you are going to take it because it offers more money and opportunity.

It is not ungrateful or disloyal to move onwards and upwards, we all need to do it sometimes, especially if we have reached our limit as far as where an employer can take us.

Your boss will probably understand these things as they should be aware of where their business fits into the industry and if they have no plans to expand in the future, should expect that these things will happen.

The important thing is to give the appropriate amount of notice and make sure that your boss understands that you have enjoyed your time there.

Your leaving will open up an opportunity in a small salon for a less experienced therapist to gain some much needed salon experience and will be their onwards and upwards. Always think of the positive :)
