Is it illegal for a salon not to have insurance?

Yes, the law requires employers liability insurance and public liability insurance as a minimum. A certificate must be displayed at all times.

What happens if a salon does not have it? X

You can be prosecuted and closed down.

Yes if you are a mobile therapist you need insurance to cover yourself

I have it through babtac but I was wondering if local council had the power to stop someone trading if they don't have insurance??

Yes I believe so.

I found Hamilton Fraser to be very helpful whilst looking for quotes I plan to be insured with them. Their website is dedicated to cosmetic insurance.

The local council need to be notified when anyone is setting up a new beauty business, whether that be salon, home or mobile. They will only approve if adequate insurance is in place (and other relevant checks/visits have taken place), which safeguards the public. Unfortunately there are some mobile/home based therapists who do not abide by the codes of practice, and will not be insured, but at their peril!
