Hiya all,

I have been given a opportunity to work in a beauty salon which is behind a clothes shop.

The person who owns the clothes shop, has a beauty room and a nail room. the person who used to work there had to leave the country, and shes is not coming back. Myself and my friend had left our contact number, if he needed anyone for the beauty business.

The owner contacted us and explained the situation. My friend does bridal make-up, i do nail and threading. He wants us to work for him, and said we should split the earnings 50/50. He will provide the equipment, but not the products. We approached him and said to him as it is a business starting up again, he should consider 40/60, and let us build up the clientele, then review it after 3 months. We also suggested we would like to draw up a contract. He wants us to set everything up in the beauty side. We also told him, we can advertise for clients, through friends and family. He has agreed to all this. But he wants us to find insurance that willcover the beauty side and his clothes business, any ideas?

I just wanted some advice if what we have agreed is ok to go ahead with.

He is taking the pi**
it is not your responsibility to find insurance for his clothes business, only your public liability insurance for you and your friend,
if he wants you both to work for him then he has to pay you both a wage,
if he wants to take a percentage then you are self employed,
i think giving him 40% when your providing the products, doing the advertising and setting everything up is also taking the pi**,
i would offer to rent the room from him at a discounted rate for the first 3 months to give you both chance to build things up then offer him an amount for rent that you think is fair,
you definitely want a contract,

he has a choice, he can either play fair and go with what you suggest or he can have an empty room and make no money from it all,
times are hard and this is the time when you can bargain with landlords, hth

What is he actually offering to do for you for his 40-50%? Other than renting you a space?

I don't think he is taking the P***. Anyone in business would expect at least 40% of their business to go out in rent etc. If you were renting anywhere that would be the case. But I do agree that you should be able to build up to that over a few months and see how you are going on.

You should also have a 3 month 'get out' clause in case things are not working so you won't be tied into something you can't get out of.

Hiya,

Thanks for your reply...

Im in a dilema now!!!

The thing is myself an my friend want this desperately as well, as we have both been qualified for over a year and a half, and just dont know where to start from, as we have left information with other beauty salon, and had no reseponse. I have also voluntereed to do work in nail salons, but no one has given us the time of day.

We just want to get a foot in the door, to get a clientele base, as we have no one right now. And his shop is based on a high street, so clients will come in. We dont have any clients other than family and friends,so starting up has been a bit difficult, we did think about renting, but as we both work full time, we would only be running the business at weekends.

He is gona provide the equipment, nail table, beauty bed, lamps etc. He said you guys can set it up how u want.

I know that him telling us to provide our own products, was a bit out of the way, but we pay no rent, rates, electricity. He already has business cards in the beauty salons name, which he will give out to us to advertise.

I know we are giving more than we are getting back, thats why we want to set up a agreement, where by if we have sufficient clients by 3 months, then we can consider the 50/50 option. And also a 6 month option to review how things are working.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply..

Yes he is offering the 40/60, for us using the premises.

As for us using our own products, we dont mind, as myself and my friends are trying to get a foot in the door, as we have had no luck so far, starting our business. We want to get a client base, and if things dont work out, then as per the agreement we will have drafted up, we can either move forward or backwards.

Good luck hun, i wish you both well
