hi there everybody,
new geek on the block from south cambridgeshire.
Took Creative nail course 4 years ago, only managed to practise on friends for about 6mths then gave it up cos of baby and relocation.
have now descided to take it up again and really make it my living. Now practising on myself for 2mths, smile lines not bad at all, no bubbles in the pink. re-balance every 2 weeks as slight white starts to appear in edges of nails (start of lifting?). nails have never come off.
small community and plenty of potetial customers (also good friends with a hairdresser which is handy) but I am so scared:
1)they are going to lift at the sides
2) it takes me 2 1/2 hours to complete a set on myself (you can't do that to someone)
I have done a couple of manicures lately on friends and they have paid and I have the full confidence then.

Where do someone start? do you just do it for free on a friend so they don't complain about the time?
I have managed to get them a lot thinner that when I last started out but I still seem to file and file and file until I am sweating.

Enough about me, hope you didn't fall asleep. Hopefully there's a lot of experienced creative nail techs that can lift my hopes out there. Hope to hear from you all.

1) if you think they'll lift, then they will. you have to know WHY they lift and avoid it.
ie prep, prep and prep again, product touching the skin, all that.
2) a set on yourself is NOTHING comparred to working on a client. practice on a friend, often, and you'll see how fast you REALLY are.

to start, I had a bunch of friends, a billion of tips, they would, the friends, pay to cover the products price, we'd have a good time, I'd ask them to book half a day because what matters at first when you don't have client is to achive a master set everytime. and then you'll see you'll speed up doing them.

I don't have a client time, like I don't do a set in one hour... I used to have to do that, and will do it again for a little while to replace some techs, it's boring to have to after the clock when you're not ready (I can now do a full set in 45 mins, pink and white). it can be your goal, but in the beginning, go for more time per person, and warn them.
and practice.

as for filing...
no secret. you have to place your product the best way, to avoid buffing.
product control is not only the consitency of your bead, it's also knowing how much product you need to cover a zone. you can (and have to) practice this too
