hello,
I have just finished my level 2 in beauty therapy and starting my level 3 in september. In the mean time I would like to find a part-time job in a salon to get some experience. I would like to hear from those who found a job while not fully qualified yet . Is it possible at all?
I started taking my CVs to different salons, but no replies yet. Should I do a few small courses like nail extensions, hollywood waxing - just to make myself more employable at the moment? I would really appriciate any advice. Thank you ;)

yes it is possible. Once you have your NVQ 2 you can go and work doing those treatments in which you qualified. Many people don't ever do their level 3.

I started working part time in a salon once i had my level 2 while i studied for my level 3. Once i had my level 3 i then set up on my own.

I took advantage of all the extra courses offered at college and i also did a private course myself. it's well worth it.

good luck!

I have a level 2 and found it very difficult to find a job. Got there in the end though! Just keep looking, if there are any other courses that appeal to you they will all make your CV more appealing. Or its often suggested ringing around local salons to get some work experience for a little while, working for free but gaining valuable experience. I found it more difficult as people that were looking for L2 staff often wanted experience so it was like going round in circles. Keep looking though and you'll get there in the end.

thank you for your replies. I am thinking of doing some extra courses to make me more employable. I guess I just have to keep looking.

Yes.
I landed a beauty job in the UK without any qualifications at all.
But...that's kinda beside the point :D

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Yes, I know, it sounds very twee but it's absolutely true. Confidence is 95% of the game. The rest is paperwork. If you believe you can get out there and get a job then you will.

If you're not getting any replies, find out why. Could be that your CV is crap and needs a reworking. Could be that the receptionist is a toad and didn't pass it to the salon owner...or the salon prefers face to face appointments....anything. So ring them, get some feedback and work from there.

Also, look at the market you're in. Check out ads, talk to people etc and find out what the local salons are doing. Is it all facials? Is there an emphasis on gel nails? Is it all day spas? For example, I worked in a spa where brazillian waxing and artificial nails were frowned upon so it wasn't done whereas you really had to be on your game with advanced facials and massage. So it all depends on where you want to go and what you have to do to get there. Work this out and THEN decide whether you need to do more courses.

Thank you very much, really appreciate your reply!

I got my first 2 jobs with only a level 2 and my massage certifictae,I did my level 3 whilst working in a salon,it was tough but I did it.

Generally it will depend on what treatments the salon has to offer. If it's a pretty basic salon not offering many or any electrical treatments they may take you on.

As mentioned look at your CV.I rang round all the salons, asked to speak to the owner or the manager, told them I was looking for a job etc, then I went into the salon and handed my CV in directly.I was very lucky as both times the salons were looking for someone and asked me to bring in my CV and set up an interview there and then on the phone.

Advertise on Gumtree and any local jobsite sites, upload your CV and a picture if you can.HTH
