I just wondered if there was a governing / regulating body for nail training?

I know this might sound like a strange question, but I have been asked to write an article for a friends magazine (a sort of blog) and wanted to put my experiences of training in and want to put some tips and hints in the article should anyone reading it want to train as a nail tech. Its not an article dissing anyone or anything a I want it to be a fun, positive and motivational article on my experiences of re training at the ripe old age of 39!

thanks

You could get in touch with HABIA which is the closest thing you'll get to a governing body for nails but in fact there is no regulation in the UK for nail technicians or their training. It is in fact a big mess. Which leads us to the most important reasons for choosing a training provider that has a REPUTATION for excellence along with the most excellent products ... you will not find this at college or by doing an NVQ ... you will find it through Company training where they have had years of experience and where training is the culture of the company.

I totally agree Geeg. you are spot on there (of course) and I am a little taken aback that there is no regulation as such. I have just had to retrain with nsi at chester as the nail training i got in november somewhere else was very patchy .I just want to write that section in such a way so that people will feel informed, inspired and motivated to do their research. I want to encourage them to ask their questions and then go to the training provider of their choice once they are sure that they are choosing them for all the right reasons feeling confident and positive.

so I shall google HABIA and get in touch with them . thanks again geeg.

We're not the only country to have no regulation .. it is only in the last 10 years or so that all of the USA states brought in licensing!

This is the reason that CND took the stand they did, in the UK, 25 years ago .. no training no product!! They have worked tirelessly to regulate at least their own CND trained technicians and many in the industry have tried to follow that example BUT sadly .. there are still many more nail suppliers who will just sell to anyone, no questions asked.

If you ask my opinion it is they (these greedy uncaring ones) who want regulating.

i did not know that about the usa. i wonder if there will ever be regulation in this country?

anyway, back to my article! thanks again geeg, you have given me other things to think about for this article.

Why is there no strict regulating body Gigi? Do you know what the reasons are?

Well I think like in may countries ... Spain is another prime example ... nails got started before anyone knew what they were and by the time someone decided they needed regulating, it was well AFTER the industry had already been firmly established.

It's always difficult to address things 'after the horse has bolted' if you know what I mean.

Regulators can't put people out of business when they have been working for years, once new regulations come in (if ever they do). All they can do is give a person time to requalify or whatever (usually 2 years). So none of us has to worry. Even if the NVQ was made mandatory, they would have to allow 2 years for those without it to get it ... which is plenty of time. and would having that qualification create a standard?? No, as we already see.

For most of us it would be like going back to pre school to have to do an NVQ. It is a minimum qualification, as most of us should be aware, not the 'be all and end all'. In most cases, doing an NVQ doesn't even prepare a person to get started in the industry. Also the NVQ is really not refelectivve of what we do in the industry. It puts emphasis on all the wrong things. DON'T get me started!!

Thanks for the explanation as I could never quite understand how there was no strict monitoring system.

You are correct in what you say about having a basic qualification as a standard and I agree that it is only the tip of the iceberg for learning.

thank you geeg. I will definately come to you if i get stuck. thats really kind of you , thank you!
