Hi I've done a couple of manicures on a lady who is 82 and has diabetes and arthritis. I know the things about being careful not to cut skin etc but wondering if anyone has any suggestions to add to manicure to help her nails and also arthritis which she has quite badly in one hand.
At the minute i use Solar manicure which she absolutely loves!! I have been applying nail strengthener and loads of solar oil. I did think about using heated mitts next time but wasn't sure on a diabetic.

Anyone have any suggestions to help stop her nails from breaking?
Thanks xx

Hi

In relation to her arthritis, you could offer her a paraffin wax dip. I suffer from severe arthritis and I couldnt work without my paraffin wax dips, they are fantastic for easing the joints, just make sure you only use gentle pressure when you remove the cooled wax. Not sure about the diabetes aspect of the manicure though, perhaps someone else with experience of this will be able to advise you.

I think the whole diabetes thing can be a little blown out of proportion. Everyone suffers from it differently and so we need to use our professional judgement.

Parafin wax would be a lovely idea unless due to her diabetes she has circulation problems (she wont be able to feel the heat hence you could burn her) This would be the same with mitts - they can get very hot!

What about warm towels? That way they dont have to be hot as such if she has circulation problems.

There are lots of different ways diabete affects someone but to answer your quesiton I think the circulation thing is most relevant.

Heated mitts and gentle massage and hot paraffin are all things that are not only good for diabetics' circulation but also very soothing for the arthritis.

Don't you just love the oldies as clients?? They are so appreciative of the attention and often they are short on hugs and physical contact so it is particularly wonderful when they have a caring technician who can provide that. Sounds as if you are one of those so ... lucky lady.

Thanks everyone for replies. Think I will go with the heated mitts next time she comes in, she is such a lovely lady! Can anyone recommend anything from Creative to use with the heated mitts or would i just use them when i massage in the Solar Silk? I do have a hand mask I can use but if there are any equivalent ones to go with Solar manicure that would be even better!!!

You don't need anything more than Solar Butter and the heated mitts. Her skin will feel and look devine.
