By holding the pad correctly.

The Graham plastic backed pads work great, too.

When using cotton balls, I hold between my fore and middle fingers between the first and second knuckle. HTH.

Or wearing coloured gel instead of polish! I've never mastered the skill of protecting my own nails......:o

To be honest I cant be bothered with the faffing around. I like to get straight in there and get it all off. So I just wear a clear varnish most of the time xxx
