Hi Girls. I wasnt sure what forum to post this on! my mother in law has just had a mastectomy and has also had a few lymph nodes removed from her underarm. i am qualified to do massage but she has asked me to massage her arm for her as the docor has told her to massage her arm but she cant do it herself. shes asked me because she feels comfortable taking her clothes off infront of me but noone else. i want to help but im not sure what massage techniques i should use. There is no lymphodema in the area at the moment and chemotherapy and radiation doesnt start for another 3 weeks as i know this will effect the massage. has anyone else ever has to do this? if so could i have some advice or should i have a word and search for someone who does this kind of thing all the time? XX

Your mum will probably have been assigned a specialist nurse who she can contact to ask all sorts of questions. I recently did my first massage on my mum after cancer, surgery and radiotherapy, she checked with her nurse first and I ended up using mainly effleurage strokes, keeping it light and away from any still tender areas.
