How many nail techs suffer with migrains? :irked:

What causes them?

The way we sit/posture?, fumes? allergies? straining our eyes all day?

Is there a way for us to prevent them? What are YOUR thoughts?

I get migrains at least 3 times a week, I take meds and they help but I still cannot put my finger on the exact cause, is this common in OUR profession? How many other techs suffer with the blinding pain of a migrain head ache?

Don't even get me started on them !!

Mine are a combination of certains smells, posture & eye strain not to mention the different types of food i can't eat :irked:

Not found a way to prevent them, one of the reasons i stopped doing nail enhancements was because i would get an instant headache so just stick to natural nails now.

The only thing that helps is my chiropractor does cranial therapy & that is brilliant but its £30 a time.

I suffer from occasional migrains but i think its due to me not wearing my glasses as much as i should.... i do remember when i was training a girl on my course had to leave the room because her nose was running constantly and she began to get a very bad headache... due to the acrylic ...i do think that inhilatoin of fumes over time may contribute.... but i suppose every one is different xx

I have suffered migraines for many years, I was diagnosed with them when I was 9yrs old (now 35).

Although I do not get migraines that are work related, I'm sure that I would if I were doing L&P as I'm hyper sensitive to fumes and can't even clean my own oven. Many strong 'smells' can trigger one for me.

I also get them from fatigue, stress, my raynauds can cause one, hormone changes, waiting too long to eat if I'm having a busy day.
Fresh cold air often helps them. I also found that when I worked in an office, I had them far more often. No windows, just all that 'ventillation' crap with stale air.

I have gotten WAY busier in the past few months and mines are getting worse, so it makes me think if it's work related....

Or, because you're busier, you're not taking care of yourself and not eating as often as you should, or getting enough fresh air.
15min breaks here and there to get some fresh air will re-energize you and help keep migraines at bay. Also, keep an green apple on hand. They are energizing and again, a good snack now and then also keeps migraines away.

I've suffered from Migraines since I was little but they got extremely worse when I became pregnant first time round & I started having stroke like symtoms with them. They haven't gone since then. I have a permenant tension headaches & black spots in my left eye from one of the bigger attacks I had, I'm under specialists to try & help, had brain scan etc..... but they don't know why its got so bad or really now how to treat me.

I have Polysistic overaries so the hormone side of things might add to it, also been diagnosed with mild Lupus which can have Migraine side effects. Also just to top things off I also suffer from IBS so the three things combined can be a lot to cope with at times as they all affect each other. There isn't a cure & believe me I really wish there was as it takes over your life & the pain is unbearable at times, its like being tortured. Lost count of the diffrent meds I've been on.

Also because of the migraines I now have light sensitivity so have to wear brown tinted sunglasses when ever I go out even if its quite dull as it still seem really bright to me. Its really taken over my life.

I'm trying my best to not let it get to me & I'm fighting it all the way thats why I decided that although doing nails & beauty is hard work & a lot of training I wanted to be able to do something for me again & prove that I can do it!! At the moment I can't do it full-time especailly with having to small boys also but maybe one day!! I'm glad I trained as a nail & beauty therapist as I couldn't go back to being a Nursery Nurse with the health problems I have but training & doing all that I've now done has given me something else to be positive about!!

I do also find that I get bad headaches when I do nails sometimes but I didn't want to use the odourless L&P as when I asked about it I was told by a couple of tutors where I trained that yeh its ok but its not as good as what I now use as they have to take something out of the formula to make it odourless, thus making it not as good/effective at its job. But i think getting them can be a combination of things as well like others say such as: food, tiredness, eye strain, general health, posture etc..... so I wouldn't say it was just the products/job that does it trust me!!! HTH

I think sometimes people confuse migrain with a headache. I get a headache quite often, sometimes very bad, mostly down to eye strain and forgetting to wear my glasses. I had one very bad migraine whereby i actually couldnt see, so i just lay down and went to sleep.

I too am a Migraine suffer but mine are hormonal have had them for over 20 years and take triptans for them narmig help me but I still have to live with them. I do get headaches when working but think these are more of a tension thing i.e with sitting head bent all day. But couldn't work with a bad migraine because they effect my vision, balance and co-ordination.

ive got terrible balance and co-ordination naturally!! lol.

Never get migraines or headaches...unless I have a hang over and I do nails full time.

Have you had your eyes tested recently?

Migraines are always in the same part of your head, accompanied by one, several or all of the following (I'm all of the below):
nausea
light sensitivity
sound sensitivity
odour sensitivity
your own movement will aggravate it
vision problems
dizziness

Plain old aspirin or tylenol just will not kill a migraine.

My worst migraine was 28days long, and I ended up in the hospital twice for a shot and intravenous drugs during that period. Lost 13lbs during that time...

You are right, I on some days start at 9 am and do not stop until after midnight, (usually weekends) I don't take breaks because I have people waiting... But it's not every day just friday and saturdays.

I don't see how anyone could confuse the two, a migrain will bring a big man to his knee's they are horrible. I was in the hospital because of them and have had 3 spinal taps trying to get to the bottom of it nothing turns up.

I wear glasses without fail, I NEVER take them off, so I know thats not it, i have my eye's checked at LEAST once a year... It's a hard nut to crack... I agree with Vhunter, it has all the same symptoms for me too, the nausea is terrible...

Exactly! Many who simply just have a bad headache, claim it's a migraine and truly don't know otherwise as they've never had one. A migraine is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse than a headache from a hangover.
When I have a migraine, my husband has to leave the house with the kids. Even if they are quiet in the basement, I can hear them two floors up and it bother's my migraine. A headache.. I can function no problem. No fun, but no problem. I once had to leave my home as the kids playing in the street were aggrivating my migraine even though my window's were CLOSED.
A migraine is debillatating (sp?) and crippling.
I've had migraines that were far worse than the birth of either of my children.
YES I would chose childbirth over a migraine:!: :!: :!: (and you REALLY dont want to know how hellish the first one was! 2.5days of labour..... 4.5hrs of pushing.. yeah, and much worse)

It wasn't until 2yrs ago when my husband had his very first migraine that he truly understood. He used to patronize me, and say 'just take some tylenol'. Now, he does whatever is possible to help me.

Note: I have found a trick that helps me. Ask a friend/hubby or whatever, to firmly massage my feet. You know that spot, under your toes, between the two balls at the front of your feet? Ask them to use the pads of their thumbs and to massage FIRMLY 15 min each or more if they can... I dont know if it's accupressure, I dont know if it's the distraction from the pain, I dont know if it's because it helps you relax, or all of the above.
I just know it helps me tremendously while I wait for my meds to kick in (which reminds me, need to call dr for new script)

I take meds for mines but you are right its way way different, My hubby isn't even allowed to speak because the bass in his voice makes my cringe when I have a migraine.

I have gotten in the tub fully dressed with a pillow on my head hoping to escape my kids. I've actually thought death would be an easier experience than a migraine, and YES I have 4 kids one I gave birth to with no drugs, the other 73 hours of labor and 2 were a breeze, the tough labors which I thought I'd NEVER do again, I would do in a heart beat compared to a migraine.
