Mineral make up- what is the difference?

Hi, I am just starting my course in make up and before I start to build up my kit too much i was wondering if anyone could explain the benefits of mineral make up. I've heard it's better for your skin, but does it give the same results?
Is in worthwhile me investing just in mineral make up or should I buy conventional or a mix or both?
