Hi everyone,
Sorry to hear that your insurance premiums are rising, however unfortunately this is an industry wide matter; for the treatments you mention e.g. Laser, IPL, Microdermabrasion etc., they are all considered to have a risk attached to them and this year, all have come under investigation by the Sir Bruce Keogh Review into cosmetic interventions. In the last five years, three things have happened; first, demand for these treatments has spiked and they have become increasingly popular with the public; second, in response to the demand, more and more professionals have started to offer the treatments, many without adequate training; third, as a result of these factors, the number and value of insurance claims for this sector have risen and in turn have driven the premiums up with the main insurers and therefore with the brokers. This problem isnt isolated to beauty therapy, but stretches across all the professions including medical and non-medical.
Where possible, we have absorbed any industry premium increases this year, in order to maintain the cost of membership where possible. This isnt however possible across all the treatments. We are taking steps to ultimately reduce BABTAC premiums in the future through a number of activities, including specifically:
1. Asking that all BABTAC members achieve Level 4 qualifications for Laser & IPL by January 2016
2. Asking that all BABTAC members have at minimum Level 3 qualifications in all electrical cosmetic treatments, including micro-dermabrasion.
We hope that helps! Dont forget, cheapest doesnt necessarily mean best value; make sure youre picking cover based on value for money i.e. the price versus the level of cover many of the cheap ones lack comprehensive cover that will keep you protected.
Kind regards
