My neice lost a baby last year at 23 weeks peragnancy and was heart broken as you can imagine. She became pregnant again and after good specialist help managed to go to within a week of the due date this time. She has a heart shaped womb and when one side becomes pregnant the other side thinks it is too and she collect blood in the second half which eventually she loses when the body realises there is no baby there. She had to have a stitch inserted in the cervix to make sure that she didnt lose this one too. After he was born (long labour) she was absolutely exhausted and so the maternity staff took the baby away to give her some rest. Unfortunately this is where the problem arose....they FORGOT to feed the baby and he went 15 hours with nothing!!! As a result his blood thickened and it was only due to the fact that she had had such a problem with both pregnancies that she stayed in for more that 2 days. They said had she gone home the second day he would probably have died due to the blood thickening ( it was dehydration that caused this). I cannot believe that after all the problems with her first one that this could happen with this one, those poor parents has been through enough without this!!! He eventually went home last week and then she got a call from the hospital to say they had also picked up that the baby might have a thyroid problem and so she had to take him back to hospital for blood tests today to check this out. I just hope that everything works out ok and that they find he is ok and has no problems. My neice and her husband are going to formally complain about what happened even if all it does is to save another couple going through the same thing.
