About as far South as you can get!
AND be successful at both?

Hello everyone :), not sure if this is in the right forum as it combines hair and nails!

I work currently in a salon doing beauty and have just qualified with Creative l&p. I would love to do an apprenticeship hairdresser course at my local college (have yet to get hold of the lady who deals with it at the college as she's always so busy teaching!) but when I spoke to a girl who is also a beauty therapist she said I would have to make a decision on which I would like to specialise in. Either become a hairdresser OR a nail tech, she doesn't seem to think I could be successful doing both.

I love waxing and spray tanning which I currently do as well and want to do the Creative Spa course as well as intimate waxing with our lovely Kim.

My theory is that you can never have too many strings in your bow and as the saying goes, if you have hair, you'll most likely need a hairdresser!

Any advice on this would be appreciated as I am going to call the college again tomorrow to try to speak to the tutor.

Hiya I have a friend that does hairdressing and nails and she manages the two she is mobile so not sure if that makes it easier for her. :)

Thanks Annebet

I would be working in the salon so I suppose I would be able to divide my diary as I would if I was only a hairdresser or only a nail tech?

The only thing then would be if I had a walk-in and unless I had a spot, I wouldn't be able to do them, but this would be the same if again I was only a hairdresser or only a nail tech.

It's just the girl I spoke to made it sound like it would be really hard to manage.

xx

i do both, cant see where the problem would be ?

Thanks Lilly

I couldn't see a problem with it really either! If I run my appointment book right, it should be fine shouldn't it.

I have a way to go yet though, I don't even know if the college will be able to take me on an apprentice course yet cos I haven't spoken to the tutor! They may be full

If so, at least I'll have a year to get sorted :green:

Thanks guys

do it ! the more strings to your bow the better ! like you said you just book out the correct times and you'll not have a problem xxx

i am both a hairdresser and nail tech. It definately works for me. quite often when im waiting on my clients colour processing they have a file and polish, or if the are having extensions i make a start on them.

Thanks Debs :)

That's quite handy to know, I hadn't thought of it that way!

Yep! Works for me too! I did my hairdressing apprenticeship first, then , while earning a steady income I paid for my CND classes. I am now an EA for CND and with the extra cash from my classes I have added tanning and waxing to my services. I work at home and mobile. Most clients prefer a "one stop" shop and love having everything done by the same stylist/nail tech/beautician.

Sounds great Simone!

I like that idea of a 'one-stop-shop'! I too do spray tanning and waxing as well as my acrylics and now want to add hairdressing into the equation :)

I tried (again) to contact the lady at the college today, but she wasn't available, so I emailed instead. Surely that has to get to her??!!

Thanks for your words girls, I'll be sure to keep you posted :green:

i am a hairdresser and do beauty as well it does work well . and the more you can offer the better for your client and more profits for you :)

I am a Hairdresser, Beauty Therapist and Nail Technician and am able to offer my clients a complete make over from head to toe which works well for me. Go for it, the more you offer, the more they will want. lol

I am a mobile hairdresser and nail tech as well and find the two work great together.
Go for it and dn't be put off by negative thinking.

I've been a cosmetologist for 31 years, I started with the dirty work ( sweeping hair, shampooing, etc), then got into cutting and styling hair. After a few years i got into the nails and skin care. Now I do it all, hair, nails, skin care, full body waxing, spray tanning and anything else I can learn. I love it all.
If you have the opportunity to learn it, then learn it. it's very rewarding and great for business when you can be versatile in the art. gotta love what you do.

Hi girls :)

Well, eventful 36 hours! I spoke to the lady at the college early yesterday evening and had a meeting with her this afternoon. I got a government funded two year hairdressing NVQ level 2 apprenticeship!!!!!

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world :green:

I officially start in two weeks (Tuesdays) after the half term. The lady at the college was lovely but I had to sit a basic maths and English test  Great on the English but on a level 1 with the maths. Some of the questions I remember from school and from helping my 7 year old but some of them I was like 'wtf!!'

Anyway, I can't have been that bad because I got it :green:

Here's to looking forward, lots of education and ultimate success!!!!!

Thanks for all the replies, they've really helped me
