hiya sorry i am probably being a right pain as i have posted 3 or 4 threads asking for advice on different things! its just that a couple of my clients keep losing nails (acrylic) that i have put on and i dont know why as i do all the prepping/removing oil from nail surface, using white block to rough it up and even using nail primer. I dont get the acrylic on their skin either so i cant understand it! what else could i be doing wrong? (one of them has her nails really long).

Can you explain in detail how you do your prep? How does the client say they lost the nails? and can you see any evidence of nail plate damage? are the nails breaking or coming clean off?

hi here is my routine:

1. (after washing hands) and removing any polish, apply liquid nail prep.
2. gently push cuticles back with hoof stick if necessary
3. rough nail up with white block
4. apply nail primer (millennium)
5. apply artificial nail tip
6. apply tip blender and cut nails to size while its working
7. file nails and blend in with file
8. apply bead of acrylic (3 times) patting across the nail plate and tip then smoothing downwards with the brush
9. file with fine file, then white block
apply cuticle oil

(I do the first bead thicker over the stress area)

the nails come clean off and only one lady has some slight bruising to 3 nails (it wasnt there when i applied them and didnt over file etc, she has a blood disorder which may affect it, which i also didnt know about until after i did her nails).

I think i remembered everything there!

thanks

:)

I presume your using the millenium system which I've never used personally but if the nails are just coming clean off then it is quite likely a 'prep problem'

You say you push the eponychium back but are you actually removing the cuticle off the nail plate and around the nail folds? I use a pro pusher for this.

Here is a link to an article to help you understand what the cuticle actually is

You say you then rough the nail plate up with a white block...never 'rough the nail plate up' this will cause damage...you only need to gently remove the shine from the surface of the nail plate with absolutely no less than a 180 grit file although really I would say a 240 grit.

You are applying primer, then blending tip using a tip blender...

What are you doing after blending tip and applying acrylic?

You should be blending, sanitising then primer (sparingly)

The other day I spoke to a lady who says she was taught to apply oil during prep!!!!

Have you done formal training? and if so, did your manual suggest you do things in that order??

Hi ya, I’m still a new be in all this but what about your primer and dehydrator? I use both! I’m not completely sure why you are putting primer on the nail then adding tip and blending. But I would add tip, blend the add primer sparingly then dehydrator – always works for me and I have know lifing at all. What products are you using, I find NSI is a great product to work with.

hi thanks for the info, when i say rough the nail up i dont mean literally, i just gently take the shine off (i arent very good with words sometimes lol). I use 180 grit files too. i do nails the way i was taught at college, although i think i have been using the primer at the wrong time. I was always taught to sanitise the nails with nail prep before applying tips to remove oils etc from the nail plate and to kill bacteria on it. After applying tips and blending them in i apply the acrylic. When it is all applied i file the surface smooth and then use almond cuticle oil to hydrate.

hi yes i think i was using the primer at the wrong time! i am using millennium products at the moment (we used them at college) but am going to switch to NSI Spa range (I may be getting employed by a hairdressing salon and the owner would prefer me to use odour free acrylic). Otherwise I am at a loss as to why the nails are coming off (could i be getting the mix ratio wrong maybe? I try not to make it too wet (my tutor always said a bead of 'mayonnaise' not 'salad cream'!)

If you don't remove the non-living tissue from the nail plate you will get lifting. Preferably use a cuticle remover and a sanitisable metal tool and make sure the nail plate is clean and free of any contaminants.

aw thanks ladies! will try that maybe thats where i am going wrong! i have been adding primer to the tip and nail bed so will try not to do that! i will let you know how it goes! (its strange though because i did my own nails and they stayed on - one came off after two weeks when i caught it lifting something heavy).
