Ok so I have a few different questions...

first is regarding nail training (this is for a friend who may rent my nail area next year after training & practice)
Is there a training provider like cnd or nsi etc that trains in all areas of nails? Sort of like 1 course to learn gel, extensions, gel polish, acrylic, manicure/pedicure all in one place? If you do know could you possibly post a link to a website please :)

On to me now...

Next question :) eyebrows... (I know nothing about this so bare with me!) A lot of customers ask if I do eyebrows, their after the wax, tint, shape sort of thing, never having had my brows done professionally I genuinely don't know what it entails? Or how long it takes to get "good" at it. Obviously there's the big names like hd to train with but that's way out of my price range at the mo, so I'd like to know what other companies you'd recommend training with? Or would I be better off doing level 1 beauty? Which leads me onto the next question.....

Skin... Mainly facials I'm thinking of, a few customers have suggested they would have facials done if it was offered, having never had one of these either I have no idea what the training for it would evolve? Would I be better doing level 1 & possibly 2 beauty to be able to do this or would I be able to learn through a skin care company?

Would I be limiting myself by using individual company's and be better doing a full nvq in beauty instead?

I'm a hairdresser so know that sometimes level 2's come fresh out of college into a salon and fall flat on their faces when faces with the problems the shop floor produces on a day to day basis, is beauty like this too? I'll be my own boss as I own the salon so need to be realistic about how skilled I would be (ovs ill practice loads and loads and give it 100%) so I'm after your opinions really on this lot? Tia x

I personally think you're better off doing an nvq 2 in beauty. You will cover everything - eye treatments, waxing, facials, manis and pedis.

Some councils will now only allow you to run a beauty salon with an nvq so it may be worth bearing in mind.

Is there currently any beauty there? I only ask because your clientele are asking about it. Mine have never asked for me to do their hair.

Final observation. Is this just to generate more business or something you've always wanted to do. The name indicates hair only (thanks for the like btw) so should you just concentrate on great hair?

There's no beauty at all in the village where my salon is, so I guess I'm looking at it more as an oppourtunity than an ambition tbh, many clients have said they'd love to be able to get other things done at my salon so that's the spark behind the idea, I've rented the nail/beauty area out a few times now but find the renters so unreliable for various reasons, so if I don't do it myself I'll need to employ someone to save the hassle. With the hair business I'm not at full capacity yet so have blocks of time I could be booking beauty treatments in for, being as there is demand for it, however hopefully it's not going to be long before I'm too busy for this. I'd need to get enough beauty customers coming in to cover a wage before I could employ tho, so it's a bit of a circle lol also if I employed a beautician I'd like to be able to be knowledgeable enough to be able to step in etc should a problem arise. The shop next door is empty at the mo and we have excellent parking so it could possibly be an idea to open a beauty salon in there, but that's just an idea at the mo tho, I looked at my local college nvq beauty 1 & 2 and it seems to cover everything and more, so that's good, thanks for replying :)

My advice would be to check out your local college to see whether it is any good first. Having just completed an NVQ level 2 Beauty, our training was shocking! Without extra tuition, I would not be waxing at all now.
I think Nail Harmony do complete nail training, that covers Gel polish, hard gel and acrylics.
Which area do you think you would like to do the most? I would say that brows would be the easiest to start with as these are services you can offer whilst a client is having her hair done, so not adding much extra time to the appointment. You can also do nails whilst a colour is taking but you wont be able to leave a client with foils in to perform a facial on another client, iykwim.
So I would say brows first. I cant recommend any training companies as I did a quick one day course for insurance purposes. We covered brows when I trained in hair (way back when) ;)

Maybe if you post in skin or nails you may have more luck. Not sure why this is in consumer.

I diddnt know where to put it lol, thanks for your reply, I was thinking brows first, for the exact reason u said, it's little time and can be done during their hair service, there is a one day course available where I live but the quality of the training is sooo bad there and I have no experience other than just plucking my own lol! I already do gel polish for the nails but can't do manicure or any of the others with the cert I got, I think brows interests me the most so perhaps I'll look into that for the time being, I'll have to check the college standards too, might just book myself in for eyebrows down there! See for myself, thank you x

A quick one day mani course will give you the certificate for insurance, so that you can perform manicures, also ideal when the colour is taking for example. Did you not need it for your gel polish course? I find it a bit strange tbh, like it's the wrong way round, lol.

So definitely brows, and take it from there. I love doing them and it really compliments a restyle if you can transform the brows too.

Actually, I think Kim Lawless has a brow course. That would teach you all you need to know.

Ooo I'm sure Kim lawless is doing a course near me this year, I've seen geeks talking about it, no a mani qual wasn't a requirement for the course like it is for others, as I said the training wasn't the best, it was yet another case of getting a cert for insurance (I still did my homework and trained myself on people in the nail industry tho) I'm going to find that thread now, thank you x

I think, beautyschools has good reputation. It has also many programs. Here, Nails and eyebrows full courses can be taken with tolerable cost. For good facials, you can just follow the full indications of skin care company!

I think I would look into a brow course, this will compliment your hairdressing.
When you have perfected that, maybe add manicure/Shellac.
More than that, you are in danger of being 'Jack of all trades - master of none'.
I'm qualified in hair & beauty, but for years now, have been solely hair.
Since opening the salon, I have started to offer brow's & nails, to increase revenue, but it is quite hard to be 'all thing's to all men', so I'm looking for someone else to run the nail bar.
As far as facial's etc, personally I would leave that to the 'expert's.
In todays industry, this is a very specialised area, not just a bit of cream and a quick massage!

Well all was going well since I posted that, I had a beauty lady & a nail lady, but both left again already :( I won't go into details I believe they are geeks too, I've just been laying in the bath thinking about what's next and then this post is back up lol...

I was pondering about training for eyebrows and then vics comment from before popped into my head about being a jack of all trades lol and now red star said it too 😂😂

I'll be really honest I don't think I can manage doing beauty alongside hair, I physically don't have the time gaps in my day, which is nice from a business point of view, I wish I had 2 of me lol

What next now lol, I don't want the embarrassment of more techs coming and going but really want to offer beauty 😩

Nothing to stop you, as I've mentioned, doing nails & brow's...they work very well with the whole 'Express Beauty' theme.
Completely get your disappointment with staff, been there, seen it, got the
'T' shirt!
I have, Me, Myself, and I, (it's me on my own most of the time)..... IMO, my salon is a lovely environment to work in, and I'm not a dragon (honest), but GOOD, LOYAL STAFF are sooooo very hard to find!
Thankfully I do now have a lovely, mature 'Newbie' working with me, who I have very high hopes for.
Get that brow course booked, then go from there.
Alway's remember your a HAIRDRESSER 1st.....
