Hi all

I very kindly (and slightly stupidly it seems!) let a friend put a set of acylics on me for her training last week. They havent stayed on very well and i removed the full set today.

My nails (which are still very short as i'm an ex nibbler!!) are now really thin and slightly red where the tips were applied. Is this normal??! I've never had this issue when i've done my own nails so i'm not sure what would have caused it and if i should be concerned about them. They dont feel sore really or look infected...... its hard to explain but if i touch the thin bit where the tip was, i can feel its lots more sensitive than the bit that just had acrylic on it. The tips she used very quite thick, would this make a difference?

Any advice would be great.

It sounds like they've been overfiled, in my humble opinion. It's something a lot of us are prone to when we're new and inexperienced eg when we're blending the tips, rebalancing etc. The good news is that it'll soon grow off and your natural nails will be as good as new once more.

ditto, overfiled. if the tips she used were thick then maybe you can suggest pre-filing the well before she applies them next time to save the nails of the next guinea pig? if you removed the nails properly then if shouldn't have been the removal that caused the thin area. this is why i don't let me student hubby practice on me haha.

My poor nails! i've spent ages growing them. I use quite thin tips now so dont have to do a great deal of filing anymore. I did get quite worried when she was doing it because i got a burning feeling when she was filing them! I thought it was just her filing technique that was just a bit poor and the fact that she had to file so much off was building up heat, it seemed to start quite quickly.

Do you think its safe to put enhancements on them or should i wait until its grown out? My free edge is quite low down my nails because i was a terrible nibbler so i'm worried they'll just break straight off if i leave them without enhancements

Thanks for your replies :)

Nothing wrong with letting people practice on you just don't let them file your natural nails! It's not like you can't tell if someone is filing our nails ... you can feel it and you can see it when it is happening. There really is no excuse for it at all.

EVen if someone is absolutely new they can put their thumb over the natural nail so that they can't file in that area whilst learning the techniques to avoid damage.

I don't accept that damage is something that is a part of learning .. good teachers will see to it that students do not damage their models' nails.

Obviously it sounds as if your nails have been thinned by over filing .. tips in themselves couldn't cause damage any more than nail enhancments on their own can cause damage ... no way.

So yes, you can enhance them and then for goodness sakes leave them alone for a few months. New techs are always messing with their nails .. on off on off on of again .. leave them be and learnhow to wear them ... it will teach you allot about what your clients get up to.

Thanks so much for your reply (even if i feel like i've been told off a little!
).

I will certianly know next time not to let her file my nails! I didnt really feel and discomfort apart from when she first started filing and i felt a burning feeling but there was still alot of tip left to file off then. I asked her to stop and told her to try filing down from the free edge rather than starting at the other end (which i read on a tutorial on here and seems to have worked better for me) which she did and i didnt feel any other discomfort. I couldnt really see what she was doing as she was sitting with her head so far over my nails i couldnt see my fingers!!!

To be honest i dont really play about with my own nails a great deal. It has only around 12 weeks since i've dared to do my own! They were so short i didnt think i could practice on them to start with and i had the same set on and infilled etc them until i was asked to be a model for this friend. I left them alone as they have always been thin and not very well cared for..... if there was a nail police, i would certainly have been in trouble for mistreatment! :)

Thank you for replying though, it nice to get advice from someone with great experience. I will know better next time...... i will be a model for her again as i'm hoping she will return the favour one day. Hopefully without me returning the favour of nail damage!!!!
