Hi all

Just wondered if any one knew if you can or can't do massage if someone suffers with osteoarthritis.
I had a lady phone up yesterday and she has booked a massage with me tomorrow, I said that I would check to make sure that I could massage her and will phone her and let her know if I can't. I have looked in all my college books but can't find any where if it is a contra indication or not.
Please will someone let me know ASAP if they know.
Thanks
Kirsty

The quick answer is no, osteoarthritis is not a contraindication to a massage.

But theres always a but.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative form where the joints modify as a result of lifes wear and tear and often results in secondary soft tissue problems. Massage will help relieve these but make sure that any underlying joints are always well supported and kept in a nuetral position.

Sufferers are often on medication for the condition and possibly for other health related issues so if in any doubt speak to their GP and seek a referral or at least a recommendation that any massage will not be prejudicial to their health.
