Ok this is a personal question and I realise there is no definitive answer but I have to ask for my own sanity!!

I have 2 children which I had at 22 & 24. Im 33. For the last 18 months we have been trying for our third!

Unfortunately in this time I have suffered 3 miscarriages at 13, 6 and 10 weeks respectively!

I have been a nail tech for 6 years. I do acrylics, shellac and Sienna spray tans. I take every precaution with fume and dust extraction, I use carbon filtered masks to spray tans. I myself stop tanning myself the minute I suspect I'm pregnant and I only use shellac on my nails!

My mum is convinced it's my job that could be causing the miscarriages! I have read everything possible and realise lots of you have successful pregnancies while working but wondered of there was anything else I could do within my control to minimize the risk,

Think I'm really just grasping at straws!

Hey lovely. So sorry to hear that.

I can not imagine that, in this day and age where people sue for anything, that the health and safety etc would allow people to work in these environments I they were so harmful. Or that such aver advice isn't given out at training.

Your bet bet is to see your GP. you could have poly cystic ovaries or anything like that. Seek medical advice ( NOT GOOGLE!) at least they may offer some fertility help.

I hope you find an answer soon Hun and good luck in continuing to try for a new baby xxx

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Miscarriages can be so very difficult.

This has been a big issue here as many nail techs here are Vietnamese women and Vietnamese men have also cornered the market on floor repair and refinishing. Coincidentally, both fields involve exposure to similar types of chemicals. There is a concern that the chemicals used in the nail industry can cause a variety of health problems, mostly respiratory and dermatological in nature but including problem pregnancies, but I do not believe that there has been a causal relationship shown in that regard. And it sounds like you are taking the proper precautions.

That said, it is more likely that your problem is age-related than work-related, so a through check-up seems in order.

Oh I completely understand!

Am booked to see a consultant but was just wondering if there was anything more I could do to protect myself then I do already!

Obviously we handle these chemicals everyday and new information is released all the time! Was just making sure I had all the facts! :)

Thank you tho :)

Reassure your Mum the professional nail industry has been thriving for over 40 years and during that time it has been operated predominantly by millions of woman. A huge amount of testing has taken place during this time to challenge and prove the safety of professional nail services for clients and those performing the services. If you follow the same health and safety rules that apply to any human being working with pro nail products there is absolutely no evidence to link the problems you have been having to your job.
It sounds like you are doing more than enough health and safety wise.
Good luck, and I hope things work out for you xxx

Mc can happen at any age but 3 in a row may suggest a problem. I believe this is when they start investigations. Pregnancy forums are very helpful. I personally think you are still young - I fell really quickly at 37 with no problems. I am sorry for your losses - so difficult to get through. i hope you get some answers.

This doesn't actually have anything to do with being a nail tech but I remember reading a story about a couple that had a lot of Miscarriages over a number of years, saw specialists etc and there was no reason for the miscarriages and one doctor asked about their hobbies and they made lead windows as a hobby and it turned out to be the lead that was making her lose the babies, so she gave it up got pregnant and carried to full term.
I know it doesn't relate to nails but is there anything else it could be, that you can think of?

I had my first baby at 22 before I got into the industry and then started trying for my second when i'd just started at age 24, I was only doing natural nails no so no acrylic vapours & excess dust ect, and the salon was a waxing only salon so same again no strong vapours ect. I lost 2 babies, got pregnant within a month, miscarried at 6weeks, then it took 7mths to fall pregnant again, that time I got to 12week scan and was told baby stopped growing at around 7weeks and had d&c but then I fell pregnant again within 2 months and were weren't actively trying at that point, just not using protection. Pregnancy was fine no issues and had a perfectly healthy baby girl that is now almost 1yr old. And I was doing the same job with the same products throughout so I did t put it down to the job. I did consider it up until the successful pregnancy tho x

It's so hard when there no answers as its too early to pinpoint anything, and i found myself running through any thing that I could have done wrong or any circumstances that could have caused but even a bad cold in the early weeks can cause a miscarriage. Good luck and stay strong xx

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not in any way blaming my job or the products. I'm seeking clarification!

I keep getting asked by doctors what is diff in my life from then to now and it is only my job and my age!

As with anything in our lives, when something goes wrong we look for answers! Information changes all the time, I just want to make sure I protect myself to limit the dangers!!

We are taught all the time about over exposure to ourselves and our clients of our products, so used incorrectly they are dangerous. They are chemicals! Before anyone says it, I'm mot saying this is over exposure, just using it as example!

I do make every effort to have a safe workplace, I really just wanted to check there was nothing more I could do! In my head, if I do that I won't always think "could it have been that"!

I'm just checking I'm doing the right thing! We all want to protect our unborn children!

Thank you all for yr advice tho, greatly appreciated! xx

Hi hon, I think you're right - when something like this happens, we look for answers, and sadly there might not be any.

My sister and I both have a history of miscarriages.
Are you with the same partner? Are your children the same sex? Are you rhesus negative? there are so many factors to consider.

My sister ended up working for a miscarriage charity as she couldn't make sense of it all - she had a healthy daughter easy as pie, and went on to have 5 miscarriages. After 3, she underwent a lot of tests etc but gave up trying in the end!

I miscarried my first pregnancy and then had two healthy daughters. I used to say that maybe we couldn't have boys (more pregnancys are boy babies and you're more likely to miscarry as boy - at least that was what we were told some years ago).

I'll keep everything crossed for you in the hope that you find some answers.

Vicki x

You know what, I've heard and read that a lot about boys!! Men huh!! Lol

I have one of each, my son came first!!

Awaiting results!! But do understand there maybe no answer!! Think that's what's sucks the most!

I had many miscarriages before I had my 2 kids, tests proved nothing and then later had 2 healthy kids.

My friends the same, no reason they could find and she's just had as little boy.

So there's always a chance, I know its hard and every time you worry, but sometimes there is no reason to be found and then one day it will all go well

hugs xx

Hiya didn't want to read and run! Sorry your having a tough time, I had a miscarriage then went on to have my 3 boys! Xxx

I have also suffered a few miscarriages - but before I started working as a nail tech. Suprisingly, after just a year of being a nail tech I found myself pregnant - at the grand old age of 41. The baby is now a perfectly healthy (if not messy) 3 year old :)

Just a quick update to my thread!!

Funny how things turn out.... Little did I know starting this thread that I was already pregnant!!

Anyway... So far so good... 24 weeks along with a little girl!! So happy but so nervous at the same time!!

Fingers crossed she arrives safely in May!!

Ahhhh lovely news 😘
