Was thinking about doing cnd shellac and ink london ilac. There is obviously a big price difference between products so would you price them differently to clients?

Personally no . You are pricing for the service which mostly includes your time and training . As you get so many applications from one bottle the actual product costs per service will not vary that much to be honest and certainly not worth adjusting price for

No, clients need to be driven by the right product not the right price.

If you take the price per bottle (of the topcoat, basecoat and colour coats) divided by the amount of applications possible, it gives you a basic cost per service. Assuming you’re using the same prep and finishing products for all brands, the cost will be the same. Your heating, rent, electricity, time etc. will be exactly the same whichever brand you’re using.

So if a 15ml bottle of brand x costs £25 (say there is 40 applications per bottle x 1 basecoat, 2 colour coats and 1 topcoat)= £2.48 per application. Say brand y cost only £10 for a 15ml bottle = £1 per application. All other costs are the same, so if you’re going to charge less it should only be £1.48!!!! Where I’ve seen techs discounting for cheaper products it’s usually £5 less, meaning they are losing £3.52 per service or £28 for an 8 hour day or £140 per week straight off their profit margin.

Techs who charge less for cheaper products are not really doing the maths, and are effectively making far less profit on cheaper products.

Thanks so much. The maths makes sense

Take gel polish, the cost per service for a good brand is maybe £1. For a cheap brand 0.50 pence. When you sell a service at £25, who cares to save 50p with all the risks that a cheap product brings. I never met a successful Tech or salon that bought cheap jack, or no-pedigree products. They want the best products and tools, to deliver the best service at a higher price for their clients.

The reality is, that by becoming more educated and standing out from the local competition, you can save money on advertising because clients find you, and you can charge up to 30% more. Imagine the additional profit if you could increase every service by £5, £10, £15? Much more than the cost of better products!
