You should't get any acetone on your nails if you hold the cotton wool with the pads of your fingers its tricky at first but you soon get the hang of it. Ellisons also sell cotton wool pads that have plastic backing and a tab which I swear by for removing any bits and doesn't ruin your own nails. If I remember rightly I'm sure there is a post or something on here which explains how to hold cotton wool without your own nails touching it.
