Hiya, Ive posted this thread elsewhere on salongeek but havnt had a response as yet so Ill give it a try on here! Wanting a little advice from those of you who have had the combined experience of renting a room and have also tried mobile. Id like to know pros and cons and different experiences you may have had. Also is there a difference if you are just starting out or are already established? Considering all my options but would be really helpful to hear your opinions.:)Thanks xx

Hi

Dont worry - you only need to post this thread in one of the forum sections not both. Just give it time for people to see your thread and those that have an opinion will answer it shortly.

I have done both and it all is down to your own personal preference.

It is harder to build up a client base from scratch if you are mobile, but being mobile is more flexible and suits me better than renting at the minute.

Thanx Theresa, I wasn't sure if geeks actually looked on various professional forums ie nails, skin etc and notice some threads dont get responses? nice of you to reply hun, thanks xx

Also forgot to add:

Do a search on the tool bar above for 'mobile' as this has been discussed quite a few times in the past so this is why you may not get much of a response.

I just typed in mobile in the search box and loads of threads came up so have a look.

Thanx for helping me out Im still figuring things out on here! Nice how everyones so willing to give advice and help us newbies xx

hi jodipodi,
I have replied to sooo many threads and I'm sure that I replied to yours lol. I am mobile and this suits me very much because I do treatments at my leisure without any pressure. You have to have business sense and if you don't you can go to your local business link who will give you hours of free advice and support, they are fantastic and they cover everything business from finance, to budgetting, etc. This site equally has a wealth of information and the nice thing is that it is free, and coming from people who have lived the experience. Hope this is helpful :)

Hey hun, nice to talk to you again.Yeah Ive been havin a scoot through the old threads and reading up on things. Ive just finished my business course through my enterprise champion at Tedco-same as business link -and have come out smiling today as my mentor has told me she's going to go all in for me so to speak as she can see how business minded I am (YEAY!) and doesnt want my potential to be wasted...major confidence boost.. (be careful my head is expanding as we speak hee hee!!!) I think everyone could do with a little boost sometimes. Im trying to weigh up working hours, childcare etc. Ive always thought Id go mobile but renting is starting to appeal to me....xxx

I've done mobile, then was given the opportunity to rent space in a salon (in a different area to where i live) last year, but it didn't work out so I went back to being mobile, but i've just been offered a space for a nail desk in a local hair salon (which i'm still thinking about).

Best part of being mobile is you can choose your own hours, products, prices. But, unfortunately there are only a certain amount of clients you an fit in in one day (i.e. mine is 3 sets of extensions) because you have to add setting-up & packing-up onto your time, as well as travelling to and from clients house's (and dont forget extra if your travelling at rush-hour). Also you need to make sure people know you exist i.e. advertise.

If you rent a space in a salon, although tecnically you are your own boss, you have still got to work with the owners rules, and if you are not a key holder, you can only work during salon hours. You have a better opportunity to retail because you can have more proucts on display. And you can fit more clients in in one day because you haven't got the travelling time like when you are mobile. If you rent somewhere, you need to make sure you get a contract drawn up which states your rent and how often they are allowed to change it, whether you have to pay rent when you're on holiday, and what happens if you don't make enough money to cover rent.

hth's a little xx

Yeah Ive noticed mobile clients Ive met near me want cut price treatments too and dont think I could afford to be so cheap or its pointless as I wouldnt make enough profit. I think Ill look into it properly in my area and get some ideas of rental costs etc maybe do a little of both?.. xx

If you decide to go mobile, you just have remind them that having someone come to your home is a luxury too and it should not be seen as cut-price as they are still having the same professional service.
