There are Sephora stores all over the place, and plenty of other discount beauty stores everywhere you go. NY is one of my fave cities in the world! My shopping and dinning tips and sigh-seeing tips:
Sephora - they have loads of branches around the city, see
Fragrance, Cosmetics & the Finest Facial Skin Care Product Selection at Sephora.com
Old Navy - this is a cheaper version of Gap (but owned by same company) and is the place to go for basics and jeans and stuff
Banana Republic - The upmarket Gap (again owned by same company), very nice cut to the clothes
Abercrombie & Fitch - every american jock boy (and girl) shops here. The store on 8th Avenue isn't the best one to shop in, the other is much nicer, but on 8th Av there is a model on the door you can pose for a photo with
Abercrombie & Fitch
American Eagle - the cheaper version of Abercrombie, equal quality and pretty much the same styling, but a whole lot cheaper!
Bloomingdales - my fave department store in the world!
Wholefoods - amazing food shop, and great food hall (under Time Warner Centre next to Central Park)
Florent - oh my god I can not tell you how much I love this dinner! its in the Meat Packing District and is open 24hours a day 7 days a week and I do believe featured in Sex and the City. It is incredibly popular! But it is also closing so check local press and if its open you have to go!

Empire State Building - miss it! There is one iconic building you can't see when your standing on it, and you can't see Central Pack because the Rockafella centre is in the way.
Top of the Rock - 100 times better then the Empire State, quieter and cheaper. You get unblocked views of both the Empire State and Central Park. Definate one to do.
Ground Zero - You have to see it, there is a small church there by the Millenium Hilton that is worth visiting to see stories of how volunteers helped out on the day and afterwards very moving.
Coffee and Donut / Pretzel Carts - You get these on most street corners, do what the New Yorkers do and buy your coffee and donuts / pretzels from these guys instead of Starbucks. Much better quality and a whole lot cheaper!
Central Pack - love it! its huge, you don't realise just how huge!
The subway - get a Metrocard and use this, saves a lot of time and is really easy to navigate.
Use ATM's - Don't get out too much cash (dollars) before you go and don't take travellers cheques. Take your debit card (either Maestro or Visa) and you can use the cash machines to withdraw dollars, and you'll get a much better exchange rate!
Tip in Bars - This is a strange one that brits really aren't used to! When you are in a bar (and *every* bar will make amazing cocktails) for each round of drinks once you've paid leave a dollar bill on the bar. Just leave it on the bar and take your drinks. Next time you'll find you get better quality spirits used, your soft drinks will be filled up without asking if you sit at the bar, and the drinks will be stronger. The joys of free pour and decent bar staff!
Tipping in Restaurants - I think we generally double the tax.
Statue of Liberty - Take the Statten Island Ferry (its free) and you'll go past it for some great photos.
United Nations HQ - I love this place!
Thats all I can think of for now. Lemme know if you need to know anything.
