I've spray tanning at a school pamper evening in a few weeks and have had the organiser say that someone has contacted her as they are booked in to have a spray tan but they want to have henna art done as well. Am I right in thinking that they couldnt have both on the same eve???? It seems right to me but you know when you start doubting yourself? I'm not clued up on henna at all but I know that anything touching the skin after a tan is a no-no and I'm sure that a spray tan would damage the henna art if she had it done afterwards wouldnt it?

Thanks all :)

Im not clued up on henna either but I would agree with you, after a tan you wouldnt put anything else on the skin. You might be able to spray tan over the henna, why dont you speak to the person organising the paper evening and get the contact details for the henna person and ask the question....

You can spray tan over the henna thats fine. The Mendhi must stay on for as long as possible. We offer Mendhi courses xx

Alternatively, after you have applied the tan the henna person can just wipe that area clean and work there-as long as they dont need to rest on the body part to stay steady.
But if its possible to spray over the henna then dont worry.

Is there any way you could find a model to practice on first, to see which gives better results - whether to spray tan first and apply the henna afterwards or vice versa?

I'd be very interested to hear which works better from a science point of view - although my gut instinct is that spray tanning first and henna-ing later would work better... that's on account of some spray tan formulations incorporating chemicals which improve the absorption of the DHA by the skin... which should consequently also help the henna to be absorbed better and hence give a darker stain...

It's also common practice to "set" the henna with a mixture of lemon juice and sugar after applying the design... again my gut instinct is that this could well turn out to be a bad idea if done in conjunction with a spray tan... if done after the tan, then the acid in the lemon juice may cause the DHA reaction to give a different colour to other areas, possibly making the tan "patchy" in the area of the henna design... and if done before the tan, then it may well stop the tanning solution from being absorbed, again making the tan go "patchy".

But again, testing this on a willing volunteer would probably be the best bet...

Thanks for the replies, I wasnt sure as dont do the henna myself. The event was a few weeks back and I didnt see anyone who had henna tatoos so Im guessing they decided not to do both!!! INteresting to know for next time though so thanks.

Ah that's OK... trust me to be the mad scientist and want to test it out on willing guinea pigs LOL...
