Hi all

Advice please... I am looking to take out insurance as a student to cover me for practice etc until I qualify and receive my certificate. I was wanting to make a small charge to cover expenses, products etc., and therefore looked at BABTAC as their insurance covers this and is very reasonable.

I have also contacted The Guild today and have been advised that their student cover does not include the cutting of the cuticle. I am a bit flabbergasted about this to be honest because this is the skill that most students would probably need more practice on imo and is twice the cost of BABTAC.

I did ring BABTAC back to see if their policy covers FULL cuticle work and they didn't seem sure. I was told no, then yes and now I'm not confident at all.

Has anyone has student cover that includes cutting of the cuticle (true cuticle) so this enables a full manicure/pedicure service to be performed?

Thanks for your help.

Maybe someone is getting confused between cuticle and Eponychium?? No surprise there

You will not be insured for trimming living tissue (Eponychium) but for removing cuticle (which is non living) this is done in manicures everyday and I'm sure would be included in the insurance cover.

Nipping cuticle is not invasive and could never cause bleeding. What some incorrectly call true cuticle (true cuticle is cuticle) is non living tissue and therefore safe to remove. It seldom needs cutting.

yes... I was expecting something like that from them to be honest. I did ask the question on whether they were referring to true cuticle but the gentleman I spoke to didn't seem to know. He said he just had to read out the statement from the policy from me... which isn't very helpful to me as it still doesn't tell me if I'm covered for full cuticle work or not.

I suppose it would help if the person selling the policies actually knew what they were selling. I don't think he did.

Thanks Bagpuss... confirms I'm doing something right.

It took me a while to get my head around it but I know now what living and non living tissue in the cuticle area is and I'm doing ok with my nippers now too!

I have asked Lynne Archer, our Director, to clarify this. She has said the following:

"As a student member of the Guild you are insured to carry out the following treatments independently on members of the public outside of college for the purpose of case studies only:

Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Body Massage, Manual Facials, Make-up, Manicure and Pedicure (excluding the cutting of cuticles using cuticle nippers).

As a student member of the Guild you would be insured in a salon environment to carry out treatments that you are studying in college when directly supervised by a fully qualified Guild member.

Once you have qualified and you upgrade to a Full member you will be insured to carry out those treatments that you notify us that you are qualified in, and they have been approved for the purpose of Guild membership insurance cover.

I do not know of an insurance company that would insure you as a student to carry out the full range of treatments on the public outside the college as the risk to the insurer would be too great."
