Hi, I'm a fairly new nail tech and I have a question with regard to a clients toenail. On both her feet on the toes next to her big toes, she has developed indentations almost as if something has been pressed hard against them. She says she hasn't done anything different and hasn't bashed them or anything. I do have a great photo of it, but I can't upload it as the file is too large, but if you contact me I can email it. She came in for gel toes and I went ahead with the service, but want to find out what the problem is so I can let her know whether it will go. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm going to post the pic for you, so you can get some other perspectives on what is going on with these nails. From my experience, these are Beau's Lines and are usually caused by some type of trauma. But you said she has it on the same toe of each foot. That confounds me! Unless there is the possiblity that this was done by an efile.

I think you could still use gel to mask and reshape the nail so it looks better, but you really need to keep an eye on it so that those indents are filled in and don't end up getting the "greenies". You may also have to flash cure before fulling putting her foot in the lamp as she may be hyper sensitive to heat spikes on those toes.

This is how my toe nail looked for quite along time after I dropped the casing of a computer tower I was fixing on it, (after the swelling the multi colors and the blood and guts lol)
As that toe is slightly longer then the other's is it poss that she bangs , drops things on them a lot? Maybe her shoes are not the best fit?
Has she had toe nail enhancements before? Could she have let them get to long and caused this damage? It DOSE happen.
Could be Bue's lines like C-C said, the other nails do have some kind of dis -color or possible a line in them? Just what I see on the photo but that could be the light,
I will be interested to see what others say I love this kind of thing lol

Looks very much like Beau's line possibly due to trauma. If it was systemic I would expect the same kind of appearance on every toe. The toe looks a little like the beginning of a hammer toe but that could be the angle of the photo. She may have damaged the toe nails and a new nail started growing and pushed the old one off. That's usually what it looks like when the new nail growth shows. If you are confident with an e-file you could smooth it a little. HTH.
