Toners?

Hello everybody.
Ok we have just started on colour correction on L3 nvq. I get that if the hair goes green then you tone with red and so on but what i dont get is how do you know what colours to choose ie; 9/1 or 12/81.
Can somebody explain this in english to me or do you know where i can read up on it, just so that i am ready for my next lesson.

u need to know that u never use a 12 as a toner, its a highlift tint, different ball game that, i have heard of it being done, but not so great for hair lol. . u need to be able to look at ur hair depth first, because ultimatly u dont want to be making the hair ur toning any lighter r darker if its just a tinger u aim to remove, so if u want the hair to remain at a base of say 8, ur gonna look for a red/warm base 8. . .
