Hi. Is it right that products containing Vitamin A should not be used during pregnancy ? If so, can anybody tell me why....

There is concern that an excess amount of vitamin A during the early stages of pregnancy may cause birth defects. This is especially true if too much is eaten, but as for the skin, I guess for new expectant mums the risk simply isn't worth it.

Thanks Debs. I agree, even if there isnt evidence to support it its not worth risking.

I would say its a personal choice. I never listen too much to all the hype about what you can and cant do when pregnant. Vitamin A if taken in tablet form or from eating liver etc gets into the system and can cause problems but I doubt any products containing Vitamin A would pose a threat. I used MD Formulations and Karin herzog when pregnant both contain Vit A. They are both absorbed into the skin but I shouldnt think they go any further. Karin Herzog claim that their products despite having Vit A in are safe to use in pregnancy. Vitamin A is only present in very small quantities in skin care products and it is in the form of a palmitate, This is basically a fake Vitamin A or synthetic Vitamin A.

Vitamin A was removed from most skin care products in the 1990s after Roc brought out a glycolic acid cream that caused permenant damage to consumers skin. Vitamin A is an acid and doctors use it to thin the skin to help acne. In this instance if its prescribed by your dr I would return to him and ask him for advice.

It is down to personal choice and what risks you feel are attached to it.

Hi You can only take a limited amount of Vitamin A when pregnant. You must not use Retin A, Retinova etc etc. Small amounts found in tanning products etc are usually small and should not be a cause for concern. I did check this with a chemist who made products and the advice I was given was to check the guideline amounts from your GP when pregnant. However it is always best to err on the side of caution when pregnant and play safe. It is only a short amount of time and well worth screening all potential subtances during pregnancy.

Please have a read of this technical article by Dr Des Fernandes (Environ skincare) which explains why topically applying Vitamin A creams are safe.

Absolutely Curly Bamboo - I started on Environ when I was 6 months pregnant and reached Original Rich *5000iu before he was born. Also drank a lot of juiced fruit and veg (carrots) - my hands and feet were lovely and orange.
The whole philosophy of Environ (Vit. A) is that it THICKENS the skin thereby leaving the skin healthier and able to carry out it's function....to protect us. The thicker your skin the less UV damage.
