Hi

Like quite a few people i want to open my own salon. The four main points that i have is

i have a few years of experience
i have a fair amount of savings that i can put into it
i have found a property
and there is a demand in the area i live

However ive always worked from home and now i want to take that next step but im really confused in terms of what to do. Is there anywhere i could get a list of too do or is there anyone reading this post that opened there own salon and can guide me in order a few things i need to start covering.

Thankx for all your help ladies

i would get in touch with your local council and see what they say, they will be able to help you with all the 'official' stuff, regulations etc.

other than that, find out what your rent and rates is; sometimes people forget they have to pay business rates!

Strart making a list of additional items you will need, so you have an idea of the cost.

Start thinking of a colour sceme, even down to your towels.

Thats about all I an think of at the moment.

Just to add to what Kate said about startup costs - write down a list or use a spreadsheet to make a monster shopping list of everything you'll need! Towels, cleaning supplies, wax, nail varnish Point of Sale, till, appointment diary, shelves, sink, kettle. Also will you need to open an account with any suppliers - do you have a retail skincare range? For a salon I suspect you'll need to stock up on retail items.

Add to that any labour and materials costs for fitting out the salon, paint, walls, flooring etc.

And then you need to look at your personal bills and monthly commitments - how many months can you last with out getting many clients while you build the business?

And after all that if you've not truly depressed yourself and still think you can do it then give your local Business Link a call and arrange a meeting with a Business Advisor. Its a free government scheme to help small businesses. Have a look at their website for more information - Business support, information and advice | Business Link

Good luck!

Hi its scary starting up a new business, the beauty industry shouldnt be affected as much as the rest of the industry sectors who are struggling.

I work for a training school that specialises in helping salons/potential salons like yourself improve on the products and services they offer. This is the first time I have been on salon geek - its amazing the amount of questions people have!

The best bit of advise I can give is offer something other salons don't - ask your clients/friends what they want - most woman will say they want to look younger! Most cant afford surgery to look younger so offer them an alternative - improve on what they have - use the new buzz in the industry mineral makeup. I use freshminerals - I used to get spots and looked tired all the time- its got light relfecting properties in it and other stuff - which makes you look younger. The there's also offering permanent makeup in your salon, which I specialise in - its a cheaper alternative to surgery. I have had my eyebrows tattooed 4 years ago and the results are amazing - it gives you a face lift and open your eyes!

What treatments do you offer at the moment? Think about what makes you different and build upon it. Dont waste money on expensive advertising do your research, hunt around for the best possible insurance deals. x x Good luck for the future
