Hi Geeks,

I wondered if I could ask for your opinions? I've decided to take my first steps into the nail industry by completing CND's naturally nails course in the next couple of months so that I can go on to offer manicures, spa manicures, minx, shellac and dashing diva alongside spray tanning. Enhancements may come later.

OK I would really appreciate your opinions on how to 'speak' to people about the shellac service (besides what Shellac actually is), what I mean by this is I'm obviously going to looking to encourage people to start using the shellac system but I don't want my information to be at the detriment to enhancements (not that I'd bad mouth) but I'll give you an example of what i mean because Im having real trouble getting my words out here... articulation is certainly not my strong point.

Example:

I talk to someone who have acrylic or gel nails and I want them to use my service but I dont 'do' enhancements. So how can I encourage them to try shellac and give them a 'comparison' as to why they should try it.

I'm not silly I do know they are very different systems, I know shellac isnt an enhancement service. However I know as a consumer if I wore enhancements and someone suggested I tried Shellac I would want to know why I should change. I dont want and certainly wouldnt get in to the my mums better than your mum situation but Im just wondering how I could 'convert' an enhancement fan to a shellac fan. Maybe I can't?? So I'd love to know of your experiences either from a natural nails only specialist, an enhancement only tech or a mixture of the two how I could recommend shellac as the service to go for over an enhancement service without sounding like im rubbishing enhancements.

Btw I have nothing against enhancements

I'm a bit worried about asking this question as I dont want to come across as a bit of an idiot Im still learning and havent even started or yet booked my courses and I obviously dont want to offend anyone but I was having a conversation with my other half today and he being a real (metrosexual lol) came out with well why would some who has enhancements use shellac! Well he actually said 'fake nails' gah! I also know not only was his metrosexual hat on but he is freaking out about the amount of money Im wanting to spend to start my business up...... ive told him several times I WILL be buying Shellac so you can pack that in right now! But it is a worthy question and I thought Id ask you geeks to help a novice/newbie out not only with my prospective clients but also him in doors!

Sorry so long winded I know! I will one day learn to write a shorter essay!

Hi

I don't think it is about converting people. Shellac is designed for natural nails so will target a very different client group, like you I started only last month with CND manicure, shellac & minx to enable me to go mobile. Didnt last very long have enjoyed the training that much that I am now also doing gel enhancements lol, I think you will lose a big part of the Market if you can not offer enhancements, but wish I had gone straight to CND for gel training instead of essential nails (don't make same mistake), not dissing EN but no competition withCND and their products. I now am having to do another course to use bris a gel system which is fab! More more expense. Have a good think about what you want and research! Good luck, shellac & minx fab.

Hi Hun

Thanks for the reply! I think possibly my choice of the word 'convert' was not the best word to use. I understand that enhancements are very different to the shellac service but i just wondered if someone presented me with the question what would/shoudl/could i say. I'm the sort of person who would try a new system if id heard so much about it but before i did it id want to know why. Maybe its not a case of why have one over the other its more about selling the concept/results of shellac.

Lol yes EN I tried that a couple of years ago and didnt get on with it. Im getting on and i need someone with me to teach me but at the time my circumstances and wallet didnt allow for me to train with a person, shame i didnt know i was going to be made redundant id certainly have chosen a different path. Unfortunately my personal experience has left me somewhat with a lack of confidence with enhancements and i thought i would start with natural nails to begin with who knows i may go on to do enhancements but right now Im really excited about the natural nail, shellac, minx and dashing diva. I also had a bit of a nightmare with filing dust very itchy lol! Mind you there was probably sparks coming off me where i was filing to bloomin hard so lots more dust... oh dear indeed lol!

Although im not offering enhancements and i will lose out on a certain percentage of the market Im also all for getting people to try new things and from everything ive read about shellac it sounds absolutely amazing and really want people to try it!

thanks again for the reply really appreciate it.

As said Shellac is aimed at the natural nail client-those that dont wish to extend their nails.
Explain it as a product that can be used to protect and give a little more strength to natural nails and lasts 2 weeks without chips or flaws. Also good for people who just wear polish as it lasts longer and adds strength at the dame time.
Clients who use gel or acrylic as an overlay would be perfect clients too.
You may also 'convert' an extension wearer, do an offer and get them to try it and you never know.
Also, if an extension wearer has got to the point where their nails are now naturally long they would be perfect clients to 'convert' to Shellac.

Funny i just thought about a conversation i had with a friend of mine a while back she has naturally lovely long nails but when she went to have enhancements for a special occassion she was really upset that all her nails were cut down, so for someone like her a french shellac would be perfect!

From everything ive read about shellac and also enhancements i think its also about looking at people's individual reasons why they wear enhancements. Different circumstances such as nail biters, strong natural nails, occassion wearers, weak nails, condition of the nails and so on and so forth will ultimately effect the type of system they use.

Thanks Miss Pink23 for your reply and also your other thoughts as well.

I think I would try to encourage the enhancement clients to use Shellac on their toes... as the Spring is almost here, it's an ideal time to do this.

Shellac is just stunning on toes and the shine is what will "sell it"... as, although Enamel tends to last for weeks on toes, it never looks new and glossy after even a few days, but Shellac looks so shiny and perfect for weeks and weeks, like it has just been applied that same day.

Wear it on your own toes to show them!!

hi hun thank you for the reply great advice! unfortunately at the moment i wont be offering pedicures/shellac on toes my training budget wont stretch that far at the mo but hope to towards the end of the year along with waxing. i shall be wearing it on my fingers and toes as i dont need insurance to apply it to myself but for obvious reasons i wont be doing on clients toes without the training or the insurance, still great advice and by the time i complete my pedicure course i can whip my lil toes out and show them! thanks hun xxxx
