Hello,
Firstly - i'm loving this forum!

The advice I need is about where to work.
I'm contemplating approaching a salon to rent a table/room, or do I visit people in their own homes, or do I have people come to my home?

Also - do you find that a lot of people want evening appts, or weekend appts, or are people happy to accomodate 9-5 hours?

Thanks.

It depends on what you want and what hours you want to work. If you want flexibility, then i doubt a salon would work for you as they expect you to do certain hours on their terms. If you want flexibility, then i would say be self employed and you decide what hours you want to work and when.

It is hard when you first start out as you need to build a clientelle. I worked more hours when i started out, then gradually reduced the evenings and have to say i rarely work weekends either. Reason being i want to spend the weekend with my hubby and daughter. I get people now who want to fit in with me because they want me to do their nails, so when you are more experienced and built up a good reputation, then you can do the hors that suit you.

I am mobile for most of my clients, with some coming to me. I am lucky that i do have a room i can dedicate to nails, so that it doesn't encroach on my hubby's evening when i am working, which is rare.

Plus the other thing to think about, if you rent a table, some of your hard earned money will be going to someone else, which is ok as long as you know that. You can gain great experience from working in a salon, so I'm not saying it's a bad thing, you just have to find what you want out of this.

Hello,
Thanks for the advice. I'm going to have to give it a lot of thought, as I want it to fit around my family.
Decisions, decisions!!

Hi hun.....if you want it to fit around your family i would do mobile and work from home.....

With mobile/home you can fit it around yourself and your family....hours/days/times......a shop you have to work there hours ..xxxxx

also dont assume that a salon owner would be interested in pushing your services, or that clients will naturally want to have any beauty treatments, I worked in a hairdressers for about 9 months and most clients didnt even know I was there! Although I was employed by the salon, not renting a room
