Hi everyone,

I have just done a course at the carlton institute in durham on acrylic nails. As much it was very helpful and has give me a basic understanding of acrylic nails, I am almost clueless as to where to go from here. I would like a more in depth course and would like some advice where to start and where to go please. Im doing my spray tanning there in a few weeks which I would imagine to be pretty much straight forward but as for the nails I want to learn so much more!! Thanks x

Welcome - Sweet Squared or call 084522106060 and speak to the lovely girls in the education dept. S2 is the home of CND in the UK and nail training and products don't come any better.

Thanks for that. Id imagine they are closed now i dont suppose you know if they train in the north east preferably durham area? :)

my apologies! Im on their webiste now with locations! :o

The lovely Wendy Leighton is in your area and teachers don't come better. Ring S2 and find out what she has to offer.

I would say that CND and S2 are definitely a way forward to give you both further education and the confidence to know that you (we!) are still learning and we get better and better every day (although as gigi says - perfect practice makes perfect!!) Stick with it, you're on the right path!! :)

Thanks for the help guys. I have just been made redundant 3 weeks ago after 4 years :( , so now i suppose is the perfect opportunity to do something im actually interested in, however funds arent 'great' at the moment and I was wondering how long it has took you gys to start or even begin to start doing clients after you have been training? Is it ok to just do nails and tan or do you think doing the full beauty nvq would be better? I just dont want to waste money i dont really have and find out im still at square one. lots of questions sorry its still all a bit up in the air at the minute :o

thanks, vicky

I can of course understand your caution. Many wait far too long to get going. I started charging and doing nails within weeks of finishing my course ... yes I did ... and my clients learned along with me. I didn't give any BS about me having done nails for years as some do and I always did a good job (if not a quick job).

These days you are competing with many more than were around in my day but honesty goes a long way with clients when you are new, as long as you don't let your inexperience be preyed upon by clients who use it to get free services out of you. I have only ever done nails. You can always add beauty later and let your nail work pay for it if you feel you need to add extra services.

Nails is a profession on it's own IMO and not ever to be considered an add on service to beauty. It is a specialist service and if you do nails only part time in your business then IMO you will only have part time skills. The really good nail techs, do not have time to do anything else as they are in high demand for nails only.

Thank you very much. I will do the CND course! The products we used on the basic Carlton course were EZFlow but I have read and re read all of your advice and loads of forum posts here and have decided CND is my way to go. I just need to get hold of £500 hehe ;) .Just as well I never bought the EZflow kit for £200!! Very grateful for the advice in this forum! :D.

The Master Pack of CND products is included in the price of your CND Foundation course ... any extras you will need down the line can be purchased from S2 and Creative Academy+ locations. Most everything you need is in the pack but consumables and manicuring tools are not .. if you need/want a nail trainer this too can be purchased through S2. x

Thanks again Gigi. I have just contacted the princes trust to see if I am eligable for funding, however if not, Im just going to bite the bullet and put the course on my credit card (eeek!). If i dont try then I will never know :D. I have every intention to make a good go of this, I am sick of staring at a computer screen and the day to day office work. So , if and when , I get through the CND foundation course, I will then be eligable to work with clients in a salon after I get my CND certificate? Please correct me if I have got this wrong... :D

YOU WILL TECHNICALLY BE ABLE TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT IF YOU PASS. Whether or not you have the necessary skills to do so depends entirely on you and your ability. No guarantees that you will even pass the course ... that is also entirely up to you and your efforts and abilities.

of course, the course at the carlton institute has defiantly spurred me on , it will be an entire new career path , but id rather get the most education and training possible if i decide that this is the way i want to go. ive always been interested in nails and so on, even though the redundancy has been a blow, it has also give me a kick up the backside to begin doing something i enjoy!! thanks again,
