Was wondering what the different reasons are for nails peeling at the free edge?

There are lots of things that can cause peeling at the free edge. This is the oldest part of the nail plate and there are hundreds of layers of nail cells.

Harsh filing
physically using the ends of your nails in work or hobbies
Dehydration (from exposure to harsh chemical substances or even excess water and constant wearing of nail polish etc).
Overuse of Nail hardeners and strengtheners that contain Formaldehyde
Age (menopause)
Illness or general poor health

Loads of things. Feel free to add to the list anyone.

An extreme low-fat diet can contribute to this as well. I've noticed this when I worked in an eating disorders clinic, and when I've had clients ask me about peeling I ask them about their diet. More times than not, they are not eating any fat.

For what it's worth, their hair and skin suffers too.
