Hi

I'm due to start my Beauty Therapy training this September and I would like to ask your advice about employment once I have qualified.

I was rather hoping that once qualified I would be able to work 2-3 days a week a a reputable salon and then do a few clients at home/mobile to fit in with my young son. This would be my ideal situation.

I was having a few treatments at my local salon the other day and when I asked the Beauty Therapist (who works full-time,salaried) if she did any clients at home she shook her head and said 'no, no - that would get me into trouble with my employer'.

I can understand that an employer would worry that if a Therapist was working at home she may take custom away from the salon.

Can you tell me if this is the general rule if you are a salaried Beauty Therapist either working full-time or part-time in a salon or spa.

I look forward to your replies.

Have a good day.

Best wishes
Tracy

I guess everyones ideas are different. I could turn a blind eye to employees treating immediate friends & family on the side but I would not be happy at all about them treating potential salon clients.

The only way you may get around this is by living approx 10-20 miles away from the salon.

I work in a salon and still have clients at home - who are mainly friends and family. I have a few who are not friends/family.
However, I had these clients before I started working part-time in a salon.

Some of the clients at the salon know I work from home. There is no way I would ask them to be my client at home. It wont be right.

I have a non-compete section in my contract I know that the girls still do other Polish girls at home but they wouldnt come to the salon as its too expensive so I dont mind. Most clients who go to salons wouldnt really go to a staff members home. IF however you set up a proper home-based salon with competing/the same products and registered for tax I would have a problem and no I wouldnt hire you

Hi

Thanks for your replies. Definitely food for thought.

Best wishes

Hi hun. I work 3 days per week in a salon and work the other 4 days at home in my home salon.
Playing by the rules you should not advertise your services within 3 miles surrounding the salon.
I dont tell my boss i do clients from home. She doesnt need to know does she?
Stop worrying hun afterall we need to think of wots best for ourselves in this world. No one else is gonna help us!! lol x
