I posted this today on my Facebook and had a lot of interest so though i would share on here as the 100 year anniversary this year.
My great Grandad was a Captin in the first world war, He was hit by a shell leading his men and was only 30.
This is his goodbye letter to his wife and kids.
I was in touch with our local news as they were looking for memorabilia and they have actually been to his grave in France and are going to show the letter on the tv.

My great grandfather was killed at Ypres. Tragic waste of life.

The letter speaks volumes.
They went to war full of hope for the future, and met with such a shocking reality.

It just shows how brave they were for our future. xx

What a brave man, that letter must have been such a hard thing to write

They were cannon fodder....

My grandfather was Scottish , he was in WW1. The trench they were in was filled in with soil after a bomb hit closeby. They were buried , 3 days later he was the only one taken out alive .

I no its strange thinking he wrote it knowing he was happy in life and fit and well, such a waste of many lives.
They were so brave. Must have been horrendous.
Cant believe its 100 years ago x

He told my mother that they were sent out to the trenches with very little provisions and when they were gone the soldiers had to resort to catching and eating rats to stay alive.

That letter has made me cry!

My Grandfather fought in The Somme. He was shot twice and survived.
