Hi all, on and off I've been itching to become a nail technician, due to the cost of the training I've always been put off, but I am now biting the bullet and really going to go for it!

I've regreted not doing this sooner and ending up in a job that I really don't enjoy! I want to make a change for myself sooner than later, hopefully become mobile or get a job in a salon once I'm trained. Do you think 26 is an ok age to start becoming a nail tech? Is there anyone else out there who has been in the same boat as me?

Anyway, I have been researching loads and have found a training provider near me via Capital. I've heard Salon System is a no go area, but they have got 'The Edge' and also 'Cuccio' the latter really appeals to me and I've heard that Cuccio products are a hit and have great smelling qualities. Can anyone recommend between The Edge or Cuccio?

I've got to do manicure first (The Edge do a course where it includes pedicure, but Cuccio only offer the manicure), then I intend on taking up gels (as these really appeal to me more than acrylic).

Can anyone advise on the following:
Are Cuccio gels soft or hard?
Are The Edge gels soft or hard?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just SO eager to get started and hopefully you can point me in the right direction :)

This is my point of view answer but i think quite a few people may agree with me...

I personally wouldn't train with the edge, you should train with a larger nail company for instance Ezflow or CND these are the top 2 you will get THE BEST training with these companies but you will be paying a lot more in money but trust me it's worth it, i did a course and it was rubbish, i'm now to do an ezflow course and i've had a taster of it and it is so so much better, the quality of the products, the customer service, the training EVERYTHING!

I would never go near the edge.

I havn't tried or smelt cuccio etc but i have heard a lot of good thing's about it.

Good luck with ur courses keep us updated with what you choose?

26 is a fine age i done beauty svq level2 when i was 18 once finished i started in other jobs not beauty related then last year at 25 i decided enough was enough and got back into beauty doing sienna x tanning Nouveau lashes. Jan/feb this year i completed cnd foundation nail enhancement course and sooo glad i did so go for it.

I have to agree with the post above go for a top company for the best training and products....
good luck

just to add to above, even if you like gel more, if you really want to give your clients premium service, eventually you'll have to learn all systems, not now but later on.

I agree with the posts about training, remember one course is not enough, once you have qualified you'll need to be able to update your skills and even learn new, so go with a company where further training is an option.

I've worked as a manager of a large travel agency for 15 years and last year had my first baby, I too bit the bullet and went for it, jacked in my job and have never really looked back. My husband has been very supportive, and from a financial side of it its been difficult, but i've got regular client now, i'm looking into new services and products, and above all I now LOVE my job and it fits in around looking after my 1 year old.
As for training and haven't done Gel, I did L&P and studied with Youngs Nails, who i have to say were great, really helpful the course content was really good and their products are great. I've never trained with CND so I can't really comment but everyone on here seems to love them.
Good Luck!!! xxx:)

I also trained with young nails having done a vtct at college. I learnt more in one day with young nails than all the weeks i did at college so go for the best company you can find near you. I was 45 then so i dont think age matters its when its right for you, wish i'd done it sooner though

I don't think age is important when deciding to learn a new skill. I'm 34, and decided at the end of last year to go to college and get my training and qualifications to enable me to become a nail tech.

I am doing this through night classes at my local college which takes 12 weeks, and I will qualify in March. For me, doing the training over a longer period of time has given me the opportunity to get lots of practice in while I'm learning, as opposed to doing a very short course, so I feel more confident about performing treatments on real clients when I'm qualified.

Not to mention the fact that doing this through college is significantly cheaper than going to an alternative private training course! The courses I'm on cost me £65 each, and I know there is at least one private training company charging £495 for exactly the same course, exactly the same qualification! OK their course is intensive over 5 days, but personally I'd rather do it over a longer time period so I know my brain is taking it all in and I get to build up my level of experience too. So it really pays to do your research on the training available in your area.

As for the Edge products, I have been trying out a few different branded products, and have just started using The Edge gels. Their gels come in either buff off or soak off. I've just started using the soak off gels and I like them! Reasonably priced too and there is a good selection of colours. I also like The Edge nail polish.

Good luck with whatever training you go for, if you're passionate about doing this for a living then you won't regret it. Best Wishes xxx

Thank you all for your replies - at least now I don't feel alone!!

In regards to the training provider - I'll stay away from The Edge - thanks for that.

BUT Cuccio are running some courses in manicure and gels/acrylics, so would that be fine to do those? As Cuccio products are highly rated? Or would I still be looking at CND?

Thanks again all, your advice ia really appreciated :)

Do what you need to do to get where you want to be x

hi polish
personally I would stay away from both, they are cheap for a reason because they dont last as long as a decent product. I would definately go with creative, they are very well known and have lots of products as well. As for gel, you should try the L & P course, this is the strongest form of nail enhancements are very popular, they offer lots of different colour acrylics, and have opaque powders to hide the natural nail bed so you can make great nails even on nail biters. Up to you, I know creative training is not that cheap but well worth the money. Eziflow is another great name, I done an eziflow conversion course free as long as I bought their kits so this is a good idea so you can decide what products you like. Hope that this helps. Abi

I'm 38, took my courses last summer and started work in October. It's never too late for anything. Good luck!:)

I am 40 and currently training with OPI. So definateloy dont think age is a factor!!
