Ok...maybe i'm completely mad , especially as i'm so busy these days i have very little time on my hands, or maybe i'm just stupid....but...

I had a really inspirational meeting with "safe salons" last week and have decided that its about time my local borough/council and the public in my area are made aware of NSS and most importantly M.m.a.

There are so so many N.S.S in this area and has been since i opened in 2006 that i think its really important o educate the public about making an informed decision based on qualitity not price.Cheap nail salons are popping up every where and i think something needs to be done.

Problem is i'm not quite sure how to manage my "campaign"...where exactly do i start....i think i might pay a visit to enviromental health/trading standards at my local council (which is the largest London borough) and write to my local M.P and pay him a visit to...safe salons have said they will come and hold my hand(thank god!!)

....so geeks...ideas...help me out here...where do i start....i need to put together a case study too i guess....but should that be just clients in my borough (i guess so) or can i get you guys to help me out....a petition...what.??

Its something i have growen really passionate about over the years but dont want to scare the public off nail bars and do more damage then good....HELP!!!!!??

I feel its time to stop moaning about our industry and the N.S.S and start making an active stand!!!

Ideas anyone....??

my first thought is the title of your thread is different to the issues you raise in your text.
if you want help/support from environmental agencies you will need to be clear, concise and specific about the issues you want them to take notice of.
mma usage in 'nss' is much less than say a few years ago and there has been a few threads on here that discuss how the nss are upping their game/standards.
how about raising the profile of your own salon - free demo , have literature available - get the clients INTO your salon and show them the difference - make them want to come back to you - alongside your dealings with the local authorities. They will need proof of any claims of poor hygeine/chemical misuse - very hard to prove unless you have an insider there.
My gut feeling would be - why waste your energy - use some of it for yourself/salon/staff.
good luck in what ever you do - you certainly have drive and passion.

Perhaps touch base with Rachel (aka Chocolate) who has been campaigning against MMA and initiated a petition against it. She was in discussions a few years ago with the authorities in Kent.

I have tried this too.

For starters, contact your local MP and make him/her that you are behind Dr Phylis Starkey MP for Milton Kenynes 10 minute bill Dr Phyllis Introduces Her Ten Minute Rule Bill - Nail Bars and Special Treatment Premises (Regulation) - in the House of Commons - 17.03.08

It doesn't seem to have come to much but when I emailed my MP, Kerry McCarthy she responded and confirmed that she was behind it too.

I had a client who suffered damage at the hands of a local NSS, I took photos and emailed them to my MP and also the local EHO, they were interested, but the client didn't want to take further action via the EHO and the EHO couldn't take a complaint from a third party....why the client wouldn't take it further, I do not know.

If you have clients who are willing to be case studies, I would say involve your EHO, don't go to the magazines as they will put the 'bad nail' spin on it and as usual put a bad name on our industry.

Good luck, I hope you make a dent in this mal practice in your area.

Edit....it's not just about MMA, it's about mal hygiene, mis-use of drills on natural nails and untrained staff too!

in fact i have been producing leaflets about poor nail practises and doing all the things in my salon you have just listed since i opened in 2006!!

i have the "nail salons exposed" dvd playing on loop too

exactly...this is what i meant...a focus on the whole NSS as a whole

thanks Cathie...

interesting to see there dont seem to be many other gteeks interested in this thread or with no feedback...yet so many techs have a grumble about it.

Following a visit from the licence department at my local council yesterday,my day off,i called them this morning.I was talking to them about recognised qualifications and nail drill use alongside m.m.a.The lady has told me that Bromley council are now making changes.....they are writing to all salons to instruct them that M.m.a can no longer be used in this borough and that a nail drill can not be used on the natural nail...only on acrylic..she also said they are going to be asking for qualifcations to a certain standard.

My concern is how will they police this....and what are the implications to a salon not adhering to this new rules....and what about nail technicians that pour m.m.a into a empty branded (creative,ez flow etc) container??

I think im ready now to produce a letter and get it sent off to the right people.
