With all due respect with a decent website you can spend £100 on SEO and be ranked decently for a decent amount of time. No contracts. No fuss. Normally localised search results such as 'such and such your area' is low search term and easy to conquer.

It only gets harder if you are in a big city (London, Manchester etc).

I'm in London so I have load of competition and ranking highly is very important. So, I decided to do yell a few weeks ago and since I've done it, I've had lots of clients from it. And loads of hits on my website are through yell. I pay £25 a month. It's definitely worth it if in a big city as banner p says but if not it may not be necessary.
